<p>Anyone know when residence halls open next fall (F'12) for returning students? I have to make plane reservations and have to get going. Actually, my son finishes up 6/8, so I want to make this a RT. Thanks!</p>

<p>Monday, September 24, 2012 Residence halls open for returning students 9a.m.
Thursday, September 27, 2012 Classes begin 8 a.m.</p>
<p>Don’t know if you know this but they’ve made the Fall term start late so the kids have 2 weeks in December and 1 week in January as their break; in the past it was 3 weeks in December and they returned January 2nd.</p>
<p>^I like the Dec/Jan timing much better. But, why start so late? Don’t most colleges start sometime late August? This is a month later. :(</p>
<p>It’s a trimester schedule so they have three 10 week terms.</p>
<p>^^Actually, they are on the quarter system, and starting in later September seems to be the trend for many schools on the quarter system. It has its pros and cons.</p>
<p>It’s not really the quarter system as most kids don’t go in the summer. A school like Dartmouth is a quarter system, NU, not so much. But it’s semantics and doesn’t change anything I’ve said.</p>
<p>It’s been called the quarter system ever since the dark ages when I was there. Trimesters are what happens when you are pregnant :-)</p>
<p>I believe they are starting a little bit later this year (on a Thursday) because the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur, falls on 9/26 (beginning at sundown the day before). I think they wanted to give everyone a chance to begin classes together after the holy day.</p>
