Do we buy them during the welcome week?

Whenever you want...if at all.

I spent $400 on textbooks and I never opened them.

are there official bookstore at berkeley?

There's a bookstore in the student center, you can buy your books there or across the street at a place called Neds (someone will correct me if I've got the name wrong). And I know that some people buy their books on line. What classes are you taking BlueElmo?

The basement of the Cal Student Store has new and used books at expensive prices.

Ned's across the street has the same selectioni at probably a little lower prices.

I prefer to get most of my books on Amazon.com, my professor recommended amazon.co.uk if the shipping isn't bad. International edition textbooks are like 1/4 of the normal price.

If you want the cheapest books, try Half.com. You'll have to wait awhile to get them, but they can be very, very cheap (paperback international editions that are used). I generally just buy hardcovers since I like having future references anyway (although some have proven completely useless).

but if we order them online, we should generally order them before hand well before classes start? I mean, shipping takes some time. Where do you get lists of textbooks for classes?

oaklandmom: math, chem, engl, and a decal, plus one more which i will decide later

There is a link on Bearfacts that takes you to bkstr.com with all the books you need.

If you order online, you want to make sure you're going to take the class, otherwise you're wasting money.

If you order from Amazon.com directly, it shouldn't take more than a week to receive your books. If you order from somewhere like Half.com, I'd give it more like 2-3 weeks. If you order from the campus bookstore, you can just pick up your books in person.

You can order them or buy them during welcome week. Honestly, being old-fashioned and not one to trust credit cards... I like to pick them up during the week before classes start.

how can you guys tell if the book is the international edition?

It says INTERNATIONAL EDITION on the front and back covers in large block letters.

Also says like NOT FOR SALE IN US or NOT FOR RESALE or something to that extent.
