I heard a rumor that we don't find out about roommates until August... Is that true? It seems pretty inconvenient, I feel like we'd find out sooner. Does anyone know?

When I was a freshman, my roommate didn’t release his information. I met him on move-in day, August 24th, 2008.

As a minimalist, I showed up with almost nothing, while my roommate showed up with all the comforts he brought internationally. Eventually, I obtained a minifridge and microwave.

You don’t need to find out about your roommate so soon. Just bring the bare minimum, a lot of cash, and hope for the best. Ask your parents when they found out about their roommates.

Yeah, I figure everything will just kind of work out… I’d ask my parents, but they didn’t go to Cal! I guess I’m just getting curious since some of my friends going to schools in my state have already found out their roommate assignments. Mostly, I’m interested in getting to know my future roommates a little by talking with them on Facebook or something.

Last year we found out in early August so I would assume that they’ll keep with that time frame. ~3 weeks was definitely a sufficient amount of time to get to know both my roommates, so you should be good. :)

20 years ago, we found out on move-in day at Cal…I lived in Freeborn Hall.

Is there any way to find out sooner? I requested a roommate, and it is a little disconcerting not knowing whether or not my requested roommate and I are for sure getting the same room. Both of our offers are the same unit and room style…but confirmation would be nice.

Also, we got thrown into a triple - we wanted a double. Any way to possibly whine to Cal and get a double instead? Completely impossible? ;)

Whining at them will not change your housing offer.

You get what you get, and find out who your roommates are between the 1st and 5th of August – IF they put on their forms to release their info. Check your info to see if you said ok to release b/c if you said no, your roommates can’t connect with you.

Where does it say we can release our info? I looked through my again and only 2 links are open for me to look at: instructions or something and theme program. I probably put that I want my info released but I want to double check.

So, if both of us release the info, then when do we find out?

usually early August

Okay thanks!

We find out on the on the 5th of August at 6 pm.
I got that information from here: [UC Berkeley Fall 2008 - Residence Hall Move In](http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/Move_in_2010/roominfo.htm)

(It says 2008, but the url is for the 2010 page. I guess they havent gotten around to renaming it yet)

I think that is the 2008 page because August 5, 2010 is a Thursday, not a Tuesday, like it says on the page

Am I the only one who doesn’t remember what they put for this? I don’t even remember filling out an option for releasing/not releasing info. I’d imagine that I did choose to release it, but I honestly don’t remember haha. And the housing application won’t even let anyone check…

^Same position as you.

yeah is there any way we can check if we authorized cal to release our information to our roommates? because i’m not sure i did that, and i would like to

i went back to my housing application but it won’t let me click or change anything except “theme programs”

yeah I know! me too! I probably did say yes they can see my info but I want to make sure.

I really don’t even remember the application asking anything like that…Does anyone actually remember when it gave us that option?

SERIOUSLY. Everyone says “Oh if you chose to release your information…” and I’m just left there feeling like an idiot because I don’t even remember an option to do that lol.

Either people are pulling stuff out of their butts or I was just very ignorant during the application process…

I think it defaults to releasing info, and they only don’t if you like checked a box or something. Or might’ve been the other way around, check a box to release info. But I think it was check to not release. But I do remember there being something about not releasing info because I was thinking why wouldn’t you release your info to your own roommates?
