When do we hear about interviews?

I know the deadline was only just yesterday, but I applied on the 1st and I was wondering if anyone else had heard about getting an interview yet. I live in a city so I'm assuming there's alumni interviewers here.

If ED, then you should have already if they were interested in interviewing you. The deadline for alumni interviewers to submit reviews is Nov 20th.

Is it really? Wow, maybe I won’t get an interview either, then. I submitted my application late October, and I’m in the Ft. Myers/Naples area in FL.

Hey Jwest, where did you come across that info? I can’t find it on their site and it just seems weird to me that there would only be 12 days between the application deadline and the review deadline. Maybe it got extended because of the common app?
Or is it just a bad sign that I haven’t been contacted?

Definitely don’t stress about the interview. I wasn’t given an interview, and look at where I am now. q: I was also then-living in a city-- about 100k in the city, more in the larger area-- and there weren’t any Duke alumni interviewers.

Please don’t go crazy with this info, but you can see if there is an interview chair in your region here: [AAAC Contact List | Duke Alumni Association](Duke)

Thank you for that link!
But there is an interviewer in my city. Should I contact her?

submitted in mid October, no interview notification yet. I’m in central NJ

Nononononono.

They want to interview you. They signed up for this. They will contact you when they start. Stop and breathe.

Duke interviewer here. ED interviews have begun in my area. If you signed up for one, you will be contacted by your interviewer. If you haven’t been contacted closer to the deadline, contact the admissions office, not someone you think interviews in your area. During last year’s early decision cycle, I was contacted by the Alumni Admissions Office at Duke (the group that supervises interviewers) because one of my assigned students was leaving the country and was only available for a short time. She contacted Admissions who then contacted me. I was able to see her on short notice. It all worked out. Please remember that an interview is not a critical piece of your application. It is simply and opportunity for you to meet an alum and for the interviewer to give some additional insight into you.

Figismom you mentioned signing up for an interview. I don’t recall seeing anything or getting any emails about signing up for interviews. How would I go about doing that?

In prior years, I think it was a part of the application. However, I just looked at the Duke Admissions page and it seems as though the hope is that every applicant who lives in an area with an interviewer will be given the chance to interview.

I just got contacted by my interviewer! I guess I wasn’t too late after all. Anyone have any tips for how to make it go well?

“If ED, then you should have already if they were interested in interviewing you.”

This statement by Jwest22 is ABSOLUTELY INCORRECT.

I have been a Duke AAAC (Alumni Admissions Advisory Committee) interviewer (as well as an Alumni Association, which is responsible for Duke’s AAAC program, Vice President) for many years. The pertinent fact follow:

 1. Some – not all – ED applicant interview assignments were made last week.
 2. Not all applicants can be interviewed, due to legitimate constraints such as the geographic proximity of the interviewers’ homes/businesses to the applicant’s venue.
 3. Significantly, it is quite possible that the assigned alumni simply was unable to contact his candidate(s) last week, to establish an appointment for their conversation. Duke alums tend to be very accomplished and very busy individuals, and the AAAC interviewer may well have been overseas (or on an extended domestic business trip), or may have had critical professional commitments, or may have had a crucial personal requirement, and so forth.

The fact that an interview appointment has not yet been made does NOT indicate that Duke is disinterested in meeting with the applicant!

When should I assume I’m not going to be contacted and ask another teacher for a recommendation? It has to be submitted 11/21.

ibeworldstudent: Good question; I recommend you call Undergraduate Admissions for a definitive answer (and then please post the results).

If you’re not contacted by 11/18 (next monday) then you can submit another recommendation by 11/21.

I just had my interview now.

Anyone still waiting to be contacted? I thought I would because there is an interviewer in my town but at this point I don’t think its gonna happen.

I haven’t been contacted. But I’m not really expecting to be contacted because I submitted two additional letters of recommendation with my application. But I’m still really hoping I get one because I think I would do well in an interview.

I don’t think having extra recommendations really affects whether or not you have an interview. I had two extra letters of rec. and I still got an interview a week back. It just might be that they could not geographically accommodate you. You’ll be fine!
