Your move in is going to be dependent upon a few factors the first will be your DOC Trip. They try to schedule people who travel long distances (especially west coast people) the later DOC trips (F through I) so that they can drop thier stuff of in their room before they begin and move in after their trip is finished.

Last year DOC trips began on (Trip A) August 31- Sept 4 with a new trip starting each day with the exception of Labor Day. the last trip (I) was from September 9-13. The ones that are within Driving distance are ususally placed on the early trips (you can choose Dates and activities when you get your trip form over the summer).

Last year's move in Day was Monday, September 13 (don't worry your parents leave at the end of the day)

I think that you are on campus for about a week for orientation (debachery) before everyone else moves in.

I wasn't there so I will defer to Kelsey, Xan, WG, Appros or someone else who actually went through orientation. i guess no news was good news because I got an occasional phone call, and a sporadic e-mail.

Yeah, Athena, that brings back a few memories.

Mama words for all you soon-to-be graduates - expect some homesickness and some rough days. For some people it will be during orientation week, or the first week of classes, for others all the disruption and newness will be exciting and they will sail right through those weeks, then hit bottom around week 3-4 or mid-terms. Call home, M&D will be expecting this call! Go out and play Frisbee, take a walk, catch the bus to Walmart's with a friend or someone from class, take your roommate out for a pizza. The worst part is you feel like you don't have any friends, but the secret is everybody else feels the same.
Don't medicate these feelings with alcohol - these you have to recognize, and allowthem to run their natural course. What a great adventure you guys are about to have!

Coming from Texas - assuming he does the last DOC trip - should he fly in for that with some of his stuff to leave in the dorm, then we (parents) arrive when that is over to help him move in? I'm sure we'll get info about this in due time, but I can't help but wonder...thanks!

welcome to the Dartmouth Board. If your son gets one of the last Doc trips, he will be able to frop some of his stuff off at his room before he goes out into the wilderness. You can come to help him move in. Depending on his trip you can meet him when he gets back. check one of the other threads here about parents and dimensions, and you will find a listing of places to stay.

According to Cangel, move in day this year is on a tuesday. You can check some of the threads in th parents forum concerning making the big move. what we did last year as it got close to the school term, w sent stuff up via UPS (was not expensive at all) anything we ordered on line we had shipped directly to NH (no sales tax).

Thank you, Sybbie! We already have reservations at the Hanover Inn hoping we can help him actually move in on the 13th of Sept. But I guess we'll have to wait and see when he's assigned DOC. I'll check some other threads like you suggested - I really am "new to all this!"

Newto, if you do some searching on the Dartmouth website on "DOC trips" you can eventually link to the trips website. Either on this year's or last year's (08) it gives you some idea of what happens. From what I read, kid comes in, picks up key to room and goes to dinner with the rest of the trip group, then next morning the group leaves on the trip, gone 2-3 days, then student can come back to his room.

We are coming from Alabama, and ideally, daughter will get back from the DOC trip on the 10th or 11th, to give time for us to get there. amd go shopping for stuff. Right now the plan is to only bring the minimum.

The DOC is having a trip during Dimensions. It would be great if they allowed some of the prospective freshmen to go

Ledyard Canoe Club Feed

The Ledyard Canoe Club organizes paddling trips and competitions. The club holds weekly feeds at its clubhouse by the Connecticut River. Come and learn about what the club is up to!

Cost: $3

Ledyard Canoe Club is a student run organization at Dartmouth College. We are a member-club of the Dartmouth Outing Club. Ledyard is a wonderful place to cruise down the Connecticut, learn the thrills of whitewater, train for marathon canoeing or sprint kayaking, or just sit in the hammock and watch the river slip by

You will move in when there is a break between terms as sophmore summer ends August 31 and they most likely willnot be back on campus until after you arrive. The exception being students working on DOC Trips, UGA's andstudnets working on campus.

Sybbie's right. If you're coming from Texas, you'll be in one of the later DOC trip sections. When I was moving in freshman year, my dad and I road-tripped it out. We unpacked everything before my DOC trip, got me all set up, and then he dropped me off in front of Robo and left. It worked out really well.

That said, if you're road-tripping, plan to get to Hanover the day before your trip (and your move-in). Stay in WRJ or something, and plan logistics. Open a Hanover bank account, get any last things from Walmart or a hardware store, get your Dartmouth ID, talk to the financial aid people, get acclimated a bit, go to a local restaurant, etc.

If you are not 18 when you arrive to campus, definitely get the bank account thing done while your parents are still around. I believe that they will also have to sign some forms regarding your work study also. If your child has workstudy as part of their package or is just thinking about working on campus(many positions consider non -work study as well), I would also suggest that they get their resume together over the summer and begin checking out the student employment site for prospective jobs in the fall so that they can apply and hopefully get a response before they get to campus.

Do they send us a self-description form or something in advance of asigning roommates? I am afraid of getting someone I will scare the s*** out of ...I'm kind of a partier on weekends, rarely sleep Fri and Sat PM's, snowboard all over VT (will have my car parked at a frat), am very social but work my butt off all week. Getting a homesick kid who hasn't had much high school freedom/life experience terrifies me, too!!!

Since that won't happen until sophmore year, it is a non-issue now.

They do sned you a questionnaire regarding yoru preferences (early riser, noise, neat stuff like that) Over the summer they send you your dorm assignment with the name and address of your roommate.

Thanks for the advice. Is it preferable to do the move-in on Sept 13th, because there are more people around to answer questions, etc.? Or if he gets back from DOC sev. days before then and we can help him finish moving in and be on our way, are there any disadvantages to that? This is my first child to go to college, and sending one so far away raises a lot more questions! I need to plan ahead as much as possible.
