oh... haha i should've figured that out earlier...lol thanks

um... well, duh. of course i was joking.

What about taking Math 114 for Penn Med? Isn't it in the same league as "those other three" you listed?

Well, you need to have taken Math 104 or its AP/high school equivalent to go into 114. A lot of engineers do this. I really can't speak of the difficulty of it since I never took it.

On that note: I have heard less than complimentary things about Math 104, if it is possible to place out of with Calc BC would this be advisable? Right now going pre-med if that changes anything.

I didn't have APs at my high school and I really don't know anything about placing out of courses. You are right though, 104 is a tough course.

uhhh ok so now im confused. there are like 80 million options for just one regular class. how do i know what professor i want or what time i want it at or anything at all about the class..... the penn course review thing isn't too helpful b/c it isnt personal at all, just full of ratings. who do i ask?

[/quote]

I'd ask upperclassmen on these boards, for starters. Penn Course Review actually is insanely helpful though, especially for big lectures like Math 104. Unfortunately, the math professors don't seem to be picked yet for specific 104 sections. But--and I cannot stress this enough-- USE PENN COURSE REVIEW! And if you want it more "personal," make sure to write comments on all of your end-of-semester evaluations! They are trying to add reviews to the site, but last I heard not enough students submitted comments so only a few hundred courses have reviews posted right now.

Is course sign up on a rolling basis, or does it not matter if you do it the first available day or last available day?

it is not rolling.

I'm looking at the professors for Math 114 and they seem to have about 50% retention rate in past classes like 104 and 114, and one has like only 13 kids stick with it. Any stories about Pemantle, Pimsner, or Komendarczyk?

where are you guys looking at all of this information? crap, we haven't even started and I already feel like I'm falling behind lol

vankat89 - if you are basing the 13 kids thing on penn course review, that is just how many people actually bothered to fill out the survey. the math 104 and 114 lectures are pretty big. Or it could be a CGS course -- they are usually smaller. Those are numbered in the 600s usually.

it's not really retention rate, it's the fact that professors rotate through different courses within the department. last year, for example, pimsner taught 241 in the fall.

O, my bad... I've never read the course review before. Does it really matter who I have for a class that big?

I had Pimsner for 2 weeks for Math 104. Do NOT take him. He was terrible. Luckily, I found an open spot in a good professor's section on the very last day of add/drop.

When do we get the course registration info. by mail?

i just got my packet today

***? I'm closer to Philly that you are...

but i am cooler than you are

right, that explains it. :(

I got my package a couple days ago. I'm in a joint program though.

once we know what courses we're in, and what books we need, we can buy those and get them sent to our dorms right and pick them up during move-in right? ( I've heard the bookstore is way overpriced so I'll probably look on ebay or amazon for used copies)

Chem from 12-1 then Econ from 1-2? Is there enough time to get from chem to econ or will I just be perpetually late every day? I want to try for the freshman section of chemistry (is this section better or worse than normal chemistry?) and this is the only way the times are going to work out. I love how I have my classes together before I talked to my advisor.
