When do we start applying for the Stafford loan?

When do we start applying for the Stafford Loan? (For both Subsidized and Unsubsidized)

The student will get the offer of financial aid, which will include subsidized (if qualified) and unsubsidized Stafford Loans. At D’s school, the student accepts the offer of aid line item by line item. For Stafford loans there is a mandatory education component (on-line) that has to be completed before the student signs the master promissory note (also on-line), but this can be done over the summer. The loan is then disbursed to the student’s account at the college. There was no other paperwork involved as far as I remember.

I think what you want to know is when to do the FAFSA. Basically, you want it do it as soon as possible after January, making sure that you comply with the individual deadlines for each school. You can use last year’s estimates and updates it with this year’s information if your parents wait a long time to do their tax returns.

Arabrab is right…just follow the directions on your school’s website for the required counseling and sign the e-MPN. Very easy and the school should credit your account in a timely manner. I don’t think you need to worry about it until July.

I already received my financial aid package from my school, and my total loan is $5500. Do I have any application or registration to do to receive my loan?

You will have to do a MPN (master promissory note) and online entry counseling. Your school should have links for those. also both my kids had to actually accept their loans and other aid. One school had an online place to accept them. The other had to sign a form and check the items he was accepting.

Your school should have all this information.
