When do we...

speak to our advisor?

select courses?

I’m hoping that 1 comes before 2…

As I remember, my S selected courses online before he left for school. Wharton has a sample of courses to take for each year in their handbook and there aren’t many electives you can take as a freshman(at least in the first semester) so advising is really not necessary.

http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/downloads/publications/undergrad_handbook_07.pdf

My S may have met with his advisor just once. But that’s just his personality.

For single degree Wharton: Take Math 104 or 114, MGMT, ECON 010, LGST 101 or 210 (or both if you feel like it), and STAT

You can substitute LGST/STAT with another intro class if you are going to do a dual degree/minor

No advising necessary

At Previews they said an advisor/counselor type person will reach out to you during the summer and you can collaborate with them on anything you want regarding classes and the like.

Can you take stat and math 104 at the same time?

Can you take LGST 210 without haven taken 101? And if so, which do you recommend?
(My plan: MGMT100, ECON 010, Writing Seminar, Japanese, and a 5th course. Saving math 104 for the spring when it doesn’t have a horrendous curve.)

I’ve been going back and forth between using my math 104 credit and being done with calc, retaking it in the fall and doing 114 in the spring, or 104 in the spring with 114 in my third semester.

I’ve also been going back and forth between econ 1 and 2 or econ 10.

I may want a minor or something in comp sci, psych, poly sci (yes, all very different) so I wanted to talk to them about what I should do.

See… I need an advisor lol.

millhouse, if you’re in wharton econ 10 is a requirement, not econ 1 and 2. why the hell would you take 104 in the fall if you go just go straight into 114 (or not take calc at all)? (the people I talked to on my days were basically TELLING me, forcefully, haha, to avoid 104 in the fall if at all possible).

Yes, but I took Calc BC in my junior year. Got a 5 easily (as in a got a 100% on a practice so I was very good at it).

However, I forgot basically all of it. I would think that I would just need a refresher and would hope to do better than the curve and get an A. How bad is it? I heard it was bad but I could be bad because of people like me, right? I mean is it one MC question wrong and you can’t get an A?

I dunno, I’ve just heard it was BAD haha. anyway, from what I’ve heard (don’t remember from whom) 114 isn’t bad.
or you could just not do calc…which is what I do, as fun as it was (not sarcastic).
(yeah, I haven’t done calc since junior year but I didn’t take the last bit of bc/am not taking the test, so it’s kind of annoying…I don’t remember anything either!).

but yeah it’s probably people like you (and engineers, also like you in having taken calc) that destroy the curve.

Well, would I be at a disadvantage (in comparison to other Wharton students) if I just didn’t take any calculus (and assuming I didn’t want to get into trading)?

I’m gonna try to answer some questions:

Yes

Yes. 210 is easier, 101 is more interesting. Lots of people end up taking both

I would take 114 just because multivariable calculus is very useful. If you take 114 and pass, you can get retroactive credit for 104 (which means you don’t need to take the placement test or anything). Also, if you have learned 104 material or have credit for 104 already, I would advise against taking it.

If you need a refresher, buy a Schaum’s outline or something. I never took the class so I have no idea how bad it is. However, keep in mind that because 104 is a required course so most of the whining you hear is from students who hate math.

Only take econ 001 or 002 if you have credit for the other. Taking both is a waste of time. If you don’t have any econ credit, just take econ 010 (which is ridiculously easy)

No, you would be surprised at how bad some Wharton students are at math. However, I still think 114 is worth taking.

Question – I may be missing something here but why take a more advanced calculus if you already have the credit from Calc BC to place out of 104? I thought the plan was to get a 5 on BC, place out of 104, and go into STAT?

"Quote:

Yes. 210 is easier, 101 is more interesting. Lots of people end up taking both"

(because I fail at this quoting thing)
So which would you recommend for freshman fall?

Also, if I didn’t quite finish BC calc (but I had a good basis in it) is it possible to go into 114 and just kind of try hard-ish (I’m not bad at math) and do fine? Or would it really hurt you if you haven’t done calc in ages/didn’t quite finish it? (I could also just review over the summer). I guess this paragraph is really asking “so how IS 114?”

I would also like to know if you would suggest LGST 101 or 210 for the fall.

i’d take 101 first just because you can get it out of the way and i think it’s predominantly freshmen? (not sure, didn’t take this one)

210 can be taken anytime and can be a fun elective for later semesters (i loved my 210 class)

As long as you know how to integrate and differentiate you will be fine. The teacher will review anything you might need to know since lots of 114 students skipped 104.

it’s [ quote] and /quote to quote =)

As for 101 or 210, it doesn’t really matter. I guess 210 if you’re looking for an easier freshman year?

but does 210 build off of anything in 101? i mean wouldn’t it make sense that 101 comes first?

nope 101 is intro to legal system

210 is corporate responsibility and ethics

they’re not really related

can anyone tell me how difficult the internal placement test is for 104? I know it’ll be held during orientation in September and one needs to pass it to “waive” math 104. I’m taking AB so my credit wouldn’t count :(
