I am sorry if this is not the right forum (Pre-med Topics) so please excuse me because I have just joined this forum.

I am going to graduate from High School next year (2013). I would have gotten my high school diploma by the 21 of Aug, 2013. My question is whether I would be able to join the 2013 Fall Semester of a university, in particular the U of M. I already know that the deadline for the applications for the 2013 Fall Semester is the 15th of Dec, 2012 according to the U of M. I have registered for the required Sat test that I would be doing the 3rd of Nov, 2012.

If I would not be able to join the 2013 Fall Semester of the U of M, does that mean I would have to wait for a whole year then join the 2014 Fall Semester?

If this is true, what should I do that would be beneficial to me in my pre-med during the whole year I would be waiting?

If possible I would like to know about when you graduated? Did you immediately join university?

I would appreciate any piece of information.

What country are you in? Can you explain their system?

Here, in the United States, the school year typically runs from Aug/Sep through May/June (depending on the state). Students apply to college during their last (senior) year of high school. So by the time they graduate in May/June they know where they are going, and then they start that Aug/Sep after taking the summer off.

Also, here in the US, there is no such thing as “studying pre-med.” You can major in whatever you want to in college - after 4 years of college, you go to medical school for 4 more years, and then residency in your specialty.

So do you think I would be able to apply by July 2013 to a university such as U of M, University of Minnesota, and then hand my high school diploma later on by the end of Aug?
I really want to start university the 2013 Fall semester.

rhshanks - what we are telling you is that you don’t need to physically hand a high school diploma to ANYBODY to start school. You are admitted while you are still in high school; if you have a good record, they assume that you’re going to graduate in time. They admit you, and then ask your school to send a final transcript just to ensure you didn’t suddenly flunk out.

The U of Minnesota deadlines for Fall 2013 are here. July 2013 is too late to apply. You have to have everything in earlier. See below.

My apologies to the Gopher nation. I assumed OP meant UMich.

rhshanks: Like pizza girl says, given the schedule, you’ll see that applicants apply, are notified and even reply to UMinn before they get their diplomas (usually in June). that’s how it works – the colleges are fine with that. Plus, even if you dig down enough, I’ll bet you many colleges don’t even require a diploma – just the proven ability to do the coursework.

I see from your other posts that you are a US citizen who is living abroad. If you haven’t already done so, read through everything at [EducationUSA | Study Abroad, Student Visa, University Fairs, College Applications and Study in the U.S. / America](http://www.educationusa.state.gov) then make an appointment with the counselors at the advising center closest to where you live. They are expert at helping students educated in your country find good places to study in the US. If no one in that office has helped a US citizen recently, they have colleagues in other offices who have done so.

It is unlikely that any college or university in the US would ever ask to see your diploma. What they will need are official copies of your school records. When you contact the places that you are applying to, ask them what kinds of school records they will need.
