I just finished filling out my fafsa, and I am wondering when I would know if I was chosen for verification. I just signed my fafsa and it gave me my efc. There is no * next to it. Does verification happen after processing?

and then what happens?
Our FAFSA/SAR report gave the EFC and said we were selected for verification but didn’t say anything about what that meant or what to do.

The asterick shows up after the FAFSA has been processed which seems to only take a day now. The schools may not contact you for weeks or months for info and sometimes they don’t contact you at all.

30% of FAFSAs are selected for verification automatically. If they are selected there is a * by the EFC. But as the schools do not *have *to verify the ones with the * this does not mean you actually will be selected by the school. They can choose how to select the 30% of FAFSAs they are required to verify. Some will verify all the *d ones until they reach the required 30%. Some will use their own criteria. Some will verify 100% of the FAFSAs they receive. According to a couple of FA officers that post here you should not send the verification documents unless requested. So you may have a * and not be selected for verification (this happened with my daughter last year). Or you may not have a * and still be selected for verification (happened with my son). So you should wait until the school tells you they have selected you.

One thing to check is how the schools tell you. My daughter’s school posts it on the financial aid page of her student account long before they snail mail it. So we always check there periodically, and if it says she has been selected I download the verification form and fill it out and send it and the tax docs as soon as possible. Son’s school it was always snail mail and they do not have the forms to download (I am almost 100% sure they verify 100%).

True, but if you want to see what kind financial aid package they will offer you in order to make your decision you will need to send the verification documents.
