I'm planning on taking my first SAT in March, and my parents think I'm insane. This is based on the advice of my counselor and my AP English teacher. My parents both took their SATs in the fall of senior year, back in the day, and are hesitant to sign me up in March. When is the average time to take your first official SAT test? I was also thinking I could take SAT IIs in June if any if the schools that I want to apply to would like them; and then I could retake the SAT in either June or October if I don't do well. I'll only take it once if I score over 2100 the first time. What is the best plan of action? I am currently enrolled in two online prep classes (one free, one with tuition), and I will do one in-class prep course before I take the test.

Are you a junior? If so, it’s pretty normal to take the SAT in March. Your parents went through a different college admissions process, so they’d be more likely to take the test at a different time.

Most juniors’ll take it in the spring of your junior year, so you’re on track. Explain to your parents that this not only is an easier curve in the spring, you’ll have time to retake/fix your score/worry about college apps in the fall.

I’m a junior, and I took it for the first time in October.

I’m a junior and taking it in December.
