When does it start to hurt?

I realize that as a rolling admissions school, you get a slight boost by applying to Michigan earlier in the admissions process. But at what date does it turn from an advantage to a disadvantage? Obviosly there is no set date but when appoximately does it become harder to gain acceptance?

For instance, my whole application is in except for the app itself. Will getting it in next weekend (Dec. 10) hurt me? Or will it be kinda in the gray area where it doesn't really help or hurt? Any input would be much appreciated and sorry if the questions seem to wander slightly.

i dont know. you tell me.

It's not like you are gonna turn back the clock and get it in last month.....so get in when you get it done. I'd say anything you get done before Christmas is better than not. Just remember that many, many people apply UMich in Sept and thus you are coming in 4 months later than the crowd. Good Luck

A big factor is how qualified you are. If you are high up there, there is more flexiblity than if you're not.

Unless they think you're playing them as a safety.....which many folks do.

very helpful.

One other question: My dad went to Michigan for med school (not a donor though)... does this help me at all?

And as to treating Michigan as a safety, my SAT scores are 790 CR, 670 M, and 750 W, so although i believe myself to be a qualified applicant, I think they'd realize I'm not using them as a safety.

Those scores seem pretty good to me and a match for Michigan.

My question though is: what scores would be thought of as using Michigan as a safety?

i'd say an old SAT of over 1520 and a new one over 2300 would qualify you as a safety (meaning 95% chance of acceptance.)

One last question (and I promise this will truly be the last one): Is Michigan need-blind and will the fact that I can pay for everything help me at all?

So overall, 1.) how late is too late? 2.) does dad going to med school at U of M help at all? and 3.) Do i get an advantage because I can pay?

Any answers are greatly appreciated!

Get your app in asap.

Your dad being an alum is a plus for you.

The fact that you can pay is also a plus.

Get to work on your app, the longer you wait the harder it will be, many have applied a few months ago, but your chances are very good.

The benefits of applying to Michigan early (by early Octover) are many. Such as:

1) Faster response time. Those who apply in the early period apply with few students and therefore, usually get the benefit of hearing faster. Also, in the early period, the admissions officers are usually more energized and quicker to respond.

2) Peace of mind knowing that you are admitted into at a top university. Let us face it, it is an awesome feeling knowing that you got into a top 10-15 university in the nation by Halloween. And that point, you can focus purely on reaches.

3) If you get a positive response early and if you chose Michigan quickly and pay the enrollment deposit, you maximize your chances at getting financial aid, the dorm of your choice, the courses that you want your first semester at Michigan and joining the academic family (UROP, Residential college etc...).

In terms of improving one's chances by applying early, only marginal cases (students with 3.4-3.7 Michigan GPAs, 1200-1350 SAT scores and 26-29 ACT scores) will benefit from applying "early". Students with SAT scores like BigE's (assuming his GPA is above a 3.7) will not really improve their chances. But the wait will be longer if they apply later and their chances of getting merit aid will evaporate with time, as will their ability to join academic programs such as UROP and popular dorms.
