@mom2collegekids I really don’t want to go to a school here in Hawaii. As far as I know, there are no schools that are even slightly selective throughout the whole state and I would frankly rather be somewhere else. However, going somewhere else besides the west coast would mean I’m completely alone. Thats why I’m uneasy about a lot of the questbridge schools as so many are not on the west coast. The only reassurance that I’m an okay applicant right now is that I got the Questbridge College Prep scholarship- which is about as selective as becoming a finalist.
Well, you still need to apply to some Hawaii univs because the mainland schools may end up being unaffordable if you don’t win QB and/or get into a “full need” school.
For “prelaw” it doesn’t really matter where you go to college, as long as it’s a “good school” and there are “good schools” in Hawaii.
As for being “completely alone” if you go somewhere other than the west coast…sounds like you may have some family that lives on the West Coast. Well, the WC is huge so even if you have some family living there, they may not be by the school that accepts you and is affordable.
Hi @SaburosFather. We are from Hawaii too, and my daughter originally only wanted to look at California for schools. We quickly realized all public universities are out of reach financially. That leaves privates with super-selective admission rates and/or not enough financial aid (for us) and/or religious/women only (again not her preference). When I ran “meets 85% or more” financial need for the West Coast on collegedata.com, some ideas for you: University of Redlands (CA), Soka University (CA), Willamette (OR), Linfield (OR), Whitman (WA), & Walla Walla (WA).
Good luck!

I think that you’re misunderstanding what ^^ that means. What do you think it means?
Hawaii is one of the states that participates in WUE/WICHE. There are some schools in California that participate, and you may find a good deal there. How about Humboldt? There are a lot of students from Hawaii at U of Northern Colorado, so while you may not have family there, you may have an immediate group of friends.
^^
the family needs a net cost of $15k. Calif publics aren’t good with merit, so even with WUE, the net cost would be a lot more than $15k. Don’t know about UNColorado.
