It's only day four of my summer classes, but I am about ready to just lose it with one of my classes and drop it.

I've taken summer classes before and I've never had an issue with them. The course I'm taking is a general ed requirement and not related to my major. I think the teacher has gone insane though. In the last four days, we've gone through 200+ Powerpoint slides, and she's going to add probably 200 more in before our first test on Wednesday. It's only a 2000 level. I'm to the point where I just don't know if I can or want to handle this anymore. I can pick up another general ed class that won't put so much pressure on me in the Fall or Spring, but I'm a little worried about the W on my transcript.

I'm taking another class (in my major- which requires some outside observations and studies) and I'm beginning work in a lab soon, and I feel like this class is going to take up more time than the both of those things combined. I want to ride it out and see how I do on the first test, but the thought of going to the class makes me just want to cry.

Help? Advice? Anything? I know this probably sounds like I'm whining, but seriously, this is more work than my neuroanatomy class was and I'd gladly go back to that instead of this!

What class is it and do you know anyone that took that class or instructor? I know it's a gen ed class but is there any reason you took it over other options or was it the only one you could take?

Look into the rules for dropping classes you might be able to drop without record (it may not be on the syllabus but I'm sure a call to registration will answer that question right away). It seems strange you would get a "W" after only four days into the term.

The way I see it, it's not worth your summer to have take a class you hate that isn't even in your major; you need to take some break during the year.

It's a Physical Geography class. I really didn't have a choice, the class I had originally signed up for got cancelled at the last minute and it was between this and a Geological Science class (the professor had a bad rep, so I opted for the grad student). I graduate in the Spring so I really wanted to just get this last gen ed out of the way. Oh, nobody I know has taken this professor since she's a grad student and nobody's taken this class. The class I was supposed to be in everyone recommended and enjoyed.

Add/Drop ended Tuesday, and I'm pretty sure my school is strict on the "if it's after Add/Drop you get a W and it shows up on your transcripts." I could check though.

Thanks for responding! :) You're right. I do need a break at some point during the year...

You never know how strict your school is about these things. Go to your college counselor ASAP, since it's friday tomorrow (technically today), don't even bother with an appointment. Just go there and wait. Most schools are not as tough in the execution of their policies as they say they are (they want you to succeed, after all).

Welcome to summer classes. The material in Summer classes progresses anywhere from 1.5 to 3x the rate of regular semester classes. Which means you will be swamped with work. In some cases, professors may relax their grading standards to account for the accelerated pace of the course.

Constant, I've been in summer classes before and I can handle the pace. What I'm not understanding is why my 2000 level general ed is more work than my 4000 level in-major class and it's driving me crazy to the point where the stress is starting to melt into everything else. Thanks though.

definitely drop. don't kill yourself. why are you so concerned about a W showing up on your transcripts? many people have W grades on their transcripts and still get into fabulous grad schools and careers...it's not such a big deal, especially if all your grades are good and you've done impressive things outside of class.

One or two Ws is okay, just don't go over that for grad school. Also there is a difference between W in a class and W for the summer. At my school a W for the entire summer session shows up differently and is more serious because it means you technically withdrew completely from summer sessions. As long as you are taking another class, you should be okay.
