If part of my motivation in transferring between schools is financial (ex. I'm paying full price at an institution when I could be paying less at my school of choice) should I mention this in my why transfer essay on the common app? Should this also be mentioned in the LOR's? (I've told one of my professors not to mention it, but I'm not sure now.)

The reason I ask is that while it seems a legitimate reason to transfer, it doesn't exactly sound like it strengthens my application. The schools I'm applying to are need-blind, but would mentioning my financial situation in my essays be portrayed in a negative light?

Anyyyy perspective’ll dooooo!

IMHO. If your up for financial aid in a school that is need aware, it will bring more attention to your FA status. Also you shouldnt transfer for money alone. ADCOMS might think that you are only here to get your degree and will NOT contribute significantly to the school community since you might be preoccupied with finances.

There’s really no reason for any professor to mention your finances in a LOR. Your LORs are, hopefully, a way for the professor to say how great a person/student you are. It isnt a place for them to talk about your financial challenges.

You might be able to say something about the different price tags in a more tactful way. Don’t just say, “X university is too expensive but you guys are cheap.” Think value, and quality instead.

But I believe you should focus on the benefits provided by the new place. Not just financially but holistically.
