When/How should I bring up transferring?

Hi, so I’m a transfer student at UNO but I plan on transferring to umich in fall of 2019. Yeah I know, I should make up my mind. My problem is that, I’m not completely sure if I’ll be accepted into umich. I’m taking my sat in October and hopefully I get a good score on it. Other than that, the early deadline (the one I’m going for) is in November. When do I need to talk to my advisor at UNO about this? My mom said not to bring it up yet, but I really feel I should soon since I’ll be starting my application. Thanks for any help y’all.

UNO as in the University of New Orleans ?

@collegehelp1337: Your post is very confusing. Did you transfer to UNO from another college ? Are you a college student ? Why Michigan ?

Yes, that UNO. Initially I didn’t plan on going to college at all, but then I decided I didn’t wanna live in a house with 9 other people for the rest of my life so I thought a community college was good enough. Then I realized that I would barely make anything after college if I graduated with an associates degree, so I went for a university that would accept me with a low ACT score (20 :/). Before I got here this semester I had already made up my mind on going to the university of Michigan since it has a better computer science program and it’s closer to my boyfriend anyway. UNO is nice but the only reason I like it is because I get to live on my own to be honest. Other than that, When im not walking around campus failing at getting involved in things, im always in my room.

But yeah, I knew I wouldn’t get accepted to umich this year because it’s already too late to apply + I don’t have the ACT scores to get in, so I’m applying for fall of 2019. That’ll give me time to save money and get involved in things to wow them hopefully. I just don’t know when I should bring this up to my current advisor.

Unless your advisor is a professor who you will be asking for a letter of recommendation, there is no need to say anything. This isn’t high school where you need a counselor’s letter.

I wouldn’t put all my hopes into Michigan. If you really want to transfer, you should pick a few schools.

I transferred without a letter of recommendation or a word to my advisor. Pick a few schools, particularly if you’re looking for scholarship money. Transfers don’t get great aid.

You have a long ways to go to get a test score that would be competitive at Michigan.
