I'm applying to go into engineering in college, and the two colleges I have in mind are Wisconsin-Madison and Illinois UC. The average ACT and GPA at the engineering schools of both of these universities are much higher than the average ACT of the entire University. Does that mean that it is actually harder to get into these colleges, or it just so happens that a lot of people who go into these majors have a higher ACT score than most? I ask because I have about the average ACT and grades for both of the engineering schools, does that mean that I have a very good chance of getting into these universities or only a decent chance?

It is harder to get into those colleges of the university.

For UIUC, go to their admissions webpage and you can see exactly the combinations of grades/ACT for admisison to each school of the university. It’s public information.

For UWI, you apply to pre-admit into engineering. While for UIUC, you apply to specific major/program (although you may apply as undecided general study as well). In both cases, you need to have much higher score and GPA than the admission stat of the school overall. At least for UIUC, the students applying to the engineering school do have better scores and GPA to begin of, and the acceptance rate is actually relatively high.

Let’s put it this way: Whatever you used to think “how in the world are they going to be able to relate this one thing to another and make some kind of connection?” Think again.
