when do i buy the textbooks after move-in?
do we buy them before the classes start? b/c i'm not sure if i'm going to be dropping/adding any classes, so i'm afraid of buying the textbooks ahead of time...

If you want to save a lot of money buy them online before you go...

If you buy at your university store, they might have lenient return policies. You can wait it out and just make copies of the stuff you need for the first two weeks until you know your concrete schedule. You can also buy used books.

online is definitely the way to go if you're sure what classes you are taking. I buy em off people off amazon for like 1/3 the university store price and they're new hardcover versions.

how do you know what courses require which books

In the classes I'm taking the same books are used year to year. I'm sure you can always call one of the bookstores and have them tell you though.

yea Ulrich's will surely tell you over the phone as they did with me. They told me all the prices and what not too.

Umar is the resident Ulrich supporter :P while I went the cheap way and emailed most of my professors about what books to get. I saved about 90 dollars on my chem book and 65 on my math. If you're taking chem this is what my prof said, "James,

I am teaching CHEM 130 sec 600. Section 600 does use the Moore text: the 2nd edition of Chemistry the Molecular Science. However, section 300 uses the Ebbing text, you should contact Dr. Sipowska about that text
(dotie@umich.edu).

Good luck in securing your books,

Dr. Gottfried"

and for Calc 115,

" Hello, James,

Yes, we are using Hughes-Hallett Calculus, 4th edition. Good luck with your textbook buying. We look forward to having you at U-M and in Calculus.

Enjoy the little that is left of your summer,

I didn't know some sections use different books. Does that mean some sections can be more difficult than others depending on the book? Wouldn't that mean some sections have better books?

Good question lol...I'm sure some sections could be harder or easier than others. The Section 400 for Chem 130 is supposed to be more "one-on-one" style teaching. Not literally, but the class has a 200 person limit so there is more interaction with the professor and students unlike sec 100 (which I'm in lol) which could have like 500 kids. I looked at my chem book for sec 100 and i think this stuff is NOT that hard at all and I only took honors chemistry in Junior year. Thing is i went to a prep school so the hon class actually used a college textbook so maybe thats why i think this material isnt too hard anymore lol....

Section 600 is Studio Chemistry, it used to be the "honors" Chem 130 but isn't considered that anymore. The class is intertwined with Chem 125 so the professor combines labs with the class. I guess each section offers different methods of learning the subject.

The Calc 115 book, Hughes-Hallett Calculus, 4th edition, comes in Single Variable and Single And Multivariable...anyone know which one i should get?

Single Variable for Math 115

Is anyone taking CHEM 210, CHEM 211, and MATH 156? If so, have you checked out the prices for the books they require? Where is the best place to buy them new. I have checked out some websites, but the prices seem to good to be true. I think when they say "new", I think they mean in new condition (not exactly the same as actually new). Anyone have any good suggestions?

Try Amazon FIRST before anything else!! You can get books 1/3 the prices of mich bookstores in NEW condition

I'm going to be taking GTBOOKS 191, and it requires a lot of books for the year. I heard it's not a good idea to buy every single book since they don't always go through everything. I heard it's better to get them as the course moves along.

Are the books for such classes hard to get? Like is there a chance that I might not be able to get the version of Iliad/Odyssey, etc., that I really need? This is assuming I get the books as the course moves along.

Also, is it a good idea to start ordering from Amazon now and have it delivered to my house? (It's kind of late, and I don't want to pay extra money for faster delivery.) Or could I have them delivered to my dorm?

I just ordered mine yesterday with free shipping. I really hate their free shipping policies, they take like an extra five days to ship it. I'm worried it won't get here before I leave. Having it delivered to your dorm is probably a better idea.

I ordered all my GB stuff at once. If you're going to get them one by one aren't you going to pay a ton for shipping?

3 out of my 4 were nice enough to put priority shipping at no cost so I got it in 3-4 days. This other guy did standard and it took about wk 1/2...and then I realized it was the wrong book and had to send it back, haha.

Well since they're works of literature and not textbooks, I would think I could get those at a regular bookstore in Ann Arbor (when I have to) for maybe $15 to $20 each instead of ordering them.
