When is Common App a Final Submission

I was wondering...

If I apply to a school Early Decision and they use the Common App, that has got to be all done by 11/1.

However, when I apply to other schools for RD and the Deadline is 1/1, can I change the Common App after the ED submission, or is what I submitted on 11/1 final?

Thanks

You can choose which colleges to submit the common app to as the very last step. So, say you have 10 colleges on your My College list, when you finish the common app you will see the names of 10 schools with bubbles before them. Click the bubble for the school you want to apply ED to only and then submit it.

When you hear back about the ED decision you can decide what to do about the other 9.

Anything else, just ask!

Best regards,

 • Mike

Thanks Mike.

So once I submit ED, I assume I can’t change it anymore.

I don’t have to wait to the ED decision to submit RD to the other schools and can I do that in chunks (e.g. 3 schools in November, a couple more in December, last ones in January).

Reason for the last question is that I still have to do supplemental and some schools encourage you not to wait to last minute for RD submissions

thanks again

No problem!

1) Correct, once you submit your early decision common app you may no longer change it. That is why it is SO important to edit it thoroughly (print it out to look at it just to make sure it looks fine as a PDF also).

2) You do not have to wait until you hear back from ED to apply RD to the other schools. However, unless the other schools have a deadline before 12/15 or are Rolling Admissions, there is no point to apply before you hear back. The reason is, at $70 a school, you wouldn’t want to waste money applying to schools on the chance that you’ll be accepted to somewhere ED and then have to cancel all the outstanding applications, would you?

The schools that encourage you to not wait until last minute are rolling admissions, right? They are the exception.

Best regards,

 • Mike

Thanks again Mike.

On the applying earlier to the RD schools, they aren’t rolling admissions, but some seem to encourage it I guess so there isn’t a mad rush on 1/1 on their part and they can balance the work load a bit?

Ah I see. Well, then I guess that is up to you. If they recommend it, I would apply earlier rather than later. However, I am also into saving $70… so I would probably want to know why they want it long before the deadline.

Anything else, just ask!!

Best regards,

 • Mike

You can actually make different “versions” of your common application once you SUBMIT IT ONCE. If you look closely on the site you can find the explanations.
