When is one considered "a national merit scholar?"

Is a finalist considered a nms?

good question...my gut tells me it is when you have won money from NMSC, but i have a feeling that many colleges and universities use commended, semi, or finalists as 'scholars'

I believe you are considered a Scholar when you receive a scholarship from the National Merit Organization as opposed to getting merit aid from a university you are going to attend.

You are considered a National Merit Scholar when you are a Finalist and receive either a NMS, corporate, or college-sponsored national merit scholarship. Each of those are officially called "National Merit Scholarships".

Yep, fireflyscout nailed it.
