I always heard that you rush in the spring but now I’m seeing a lot of colleges do it the first week of school. At my college they have a mock recruitment in September but I haven’t heard that rush week is right away. Also, what is the difference between a Panhellenic and Non-Panhellenic sorority? I’m so confused by all this Greek stuff I honestly don’t understand it at all.
It depends on the school. There are some schools like UGA and Iowa State that I know just had rush this week for sororities. Other schools like Indiana do their rush in January. You would need to check the Greek Life site for your college to see when it is held and also what the requirements are. Some schools, rush is very competitive and others is more laid back. Some schools you will need recommendations and others couldn’t care a bit about a rec.
It really all depends on the school.
Yes, it varies by school. Freshman can’t rush at my son’s school until Spring, but there is still Fall Rush for upperclassmen. I believe non-Panhellenic means they aren’t associated with a national organization, sometimes that also mean they aren’t recognized by the school (and therefore not regulated), but I’m not sure on that. Your school should have some events set up to help you navigate the system if you decide to join.
Rush can be a huge deal. At Iowa, students were standing along sidewalks holding candles and other solemn activities. There was attire of the day. Buses of potential pledges were moving students. What you think about rush depends on you: enticing or life is too short.
It was at the beginning of the fall semester at UT-Austin. One girl in my dorm dropped out of school when she didn’t get into the sorority she wanted! My roommate got into one of the top sororities at UT. Wow, it was time-consuming. She tried to make me over, but it didn’t go well, ha.
Panhellenic usually refers to sororities in the National Panhellenic Conference, most of whom are historically white. Others include those in the National Pan-Hellenic Council (historically black) or Multicultural Greek Council (others).
Depends on the school. It can be fall or spring depending on the school. The majority of school still do fall formal recruitment and spring is continuous open bidding or COB for houses that don’t meet quota. PanHel is a term for traditional social sororities. Think KKG, APhi, etc. there are local sororities that do not have a national affiliation. And black and multicultural ones.
