When is the ACT Writing factored in?

OK, on the April ACT I got a 33.

35 English
34 Math
34 Reading
30 Science --> epic fail

What's annoying is that I'm one point on any section away from a 34 Composite...
If I somehow get an 11 or 12 on the essay, could my English be bumped up to a 36? I know it says on the site that the writing won't affect your composite score, but I've heard otherwise from friends. Thanks for the help.

i don’t think it affects your composite score…it’s a completely separate score…
im in the same boat though…just one point away from a 33 =/

It doesn’t affect your composite at all. You can calculate an english/writing score out of 36, but I don’t know how much it means.

And yeah, same deal with me-one on any section away from a 35.

Ugh, this sucks. Well, a 2240’s about the same as a 34 I think so I’m probably fine. I just hate the science section…

nope, that’s not how it works :frowning: it could be a fluke for this particular test, but for every practice test I’ve ever seen the grading rubric of, you can’t exceed a 35 if you get the maximum score on the essay - it just STAYS at 35. annoying isn’t it? I’m in the same boat with a 35 in english waiting on an essay score. it would be cool to see it jump to 36 but that doesn’t happen for the high-30s English scores.

for the lower ones it does. you can improve your English/writing with a good essay. but generally with the higher English scores the essay either keeps you where you are or hurts you.

the composite stays the same no matter what the essay is, it should say this in big red letters right above your composite on the ACT website.

^ I got a 35 on the English too but even if I wrote a beastin’ essay it won’t bump me up to a 36 ? :cry: I need the 36 to get my composite to a 31.

The sooner you realize that WRITING DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR OVERALL COMPOSITE, the sooner you can stop freaking out. :)

nope, a) because it doesn’t affect your composite like steven said and b) because, unless there is something very unusual about the curve on this test, 35s on English are generally not raised by a perfect score on the essay. it can be raised for lower scores but not a score as high as a 35.

Everyone please read xSteven’s post (#7) because it is true.
