When is the best time to call to ask a school for a better financial aid package?

Lol I don’t think we’ll be able to retire until the day we die! So at this point, anything will help. 3puppies your story sounds way too familiar. What was the outcome of your appeal, or is the the first time your family is applying for aid?

We did do an explanation of circumstances for CSS schools but I don’t think the FAFSA schools got that information because they didn’t ask for it (if I’m remembering correctly - my husband filled out the forms). I feel like I have a much better grasp of how this works though, and how our circumstances may change how our financial aid is calculated. At this point we have to wait and see what the last few schools do with acceptances and aid and then go from there. We did get contacted by one school for a clarification/update of CSS info - I hope that means that they’ve accepted him and are working on a nice aid package!

By “academics” do you mean a student’s GPA and/or test scores? How is federal aid based on a student’s academics?

State aid often is based on gpa, like Bright Futures or Zell Miller.

I get that, but I’m asking how federal aid is based on academics, as iknowcollege is asserting.

I think it was a poorly constructed sentence, combining types of aid (state and federal) in the first part, then the types of consideration in the second, with the qualifiers not referring back to the immediately preceding noun. Happens.
