When is the best time to start planning for college?

While I agree that it is too early to be arranging for SATs and college admission counselors, it is not too early to begin to learn about the process if the parents themselves did not go to college. I hope you are not mocking them, their eagerness may mask their feelings of missing out on going to college themselves. They want more for their son and that is good if he is on the same page. And, prep for college sadly enough starts with advanced middle school math if he is up to it.
Also, I slightly disagree with the advice to have him attend the “best” (most rigorous) school district. We did that and I actually think it hurt my S with respect to college admissions and even self-esteem. It is hard to be a standout in a school of superstars. He did fine and is thrilled where he is going to college (as are we) but I think he might have had more acceptances had he been at a smaller, less rigorous high school where he stood out and possibly he would have had more attention from teachers. He probably would have ended up at the same college, but maybe not… who knows? We have since moved to a slightly less elite school district (not because of above, job change) and younger sib is thrilled not to be competing with all the Tiger kids (of any ethnicity, just a type of kid).
