When is the best year to transfer?

I'm currently a freshman at Umass Amherst (and soon becoming a sophomore).

I'm planning to transfer but I don't know when I have to.

I tried to transfer this year but I heard the chance of transferring to other universities is very low during the freshman year.

It can be lower, if your HS GPA/SAT scores are weak, but plenty of people successfully do it.

At this point, next year would be your last chance to transfer to a lot of schools, as most require that you spend a minimum of two years at their institution before you can graduate.

Do u know where I can find those information bout spending a minimum of two years at some institutions before you can graduate?

One of my friends transferred to Upenn in junior year and graduated that year. I guess that Upenn is one of those institutions that does not require transfer students to spend minimum of two years?

It's not too low. I got into some relatively selective schools as a freshman. It depends largely on the school.

Is it kinda late for me to transfer during the junior year? or is it decent?
Maybe I should've applied to some universities this year.
I'm trying to graduate in three years too.

Hmm, I felt compelled to repond to this message, because I was sort of in your shoes freshman year as well.

I actually went to Amherst (LOL, let´s hear it 5 Colleges!) and after my first semester, I didn´t really love it, but did pretty well. I had heard the same information about it being tough to transfer out of a college after your first year, so actually just waited until my first semester of my sophomore year and started up the application process for the spring semester. So, transferring out as a 1st semester sophomore.

Things went REALLY well when I transferred out, but we are all different and have different cases. I had good luck, but I re-applied to all colleges I had already been accepted to (Columbia, Tulane, and William and Mary) and got accepted to... surprisingly, all three again.

I will tell you that I have a good friend at UMass right now and she applied to UNC, Barnard, William and Mary, and Berkeley. She got rejected to all except UNC. She´s a good student though, I think, she probably has a 3.4-6 GPA and studies political science and French. She accepted her admission to UNC and she will be a 1st semester junior this fall.

Hope that helps a bit? If you have any other questions, just PM me.

It did help alot! Thanks alot.

I'm majoring in business and most of business schools don't accept transfer students for the spring semester. I hope it's not too late for me.

I have GPA of 3.92 for this semester but my SAT score is quite low. I heard when you transfer to other universities during your junior year, they take a closer look at your current GPA (at your current University) rather than your SAT score.

Is that true?

yeah...sometimes those universities even don't require a high school transcript if you complete two years of college. So if you REALLY have no confidence in your HS grades, waiting until your sophomore year might be a good choice.

at least it worked pretty well for me...:)

I see...My GPA at high school was 4.1 (because of all those weird GPA systems by CA publics).

My high school GPA was ok but my SAT score was horrible.

The deadline for transferring is passed by anyway. I guess I have to try to transfer next year.

And can I graduate in an year after transferring? (meaning that I want to graduate in three years).

One of my friends entered UPenn as a junior and graduated in his junior year (he spent the past two years in other college).
