<p>I believe that means notified on or before that day, not postmarked. You need to notify them of your decision by May 1st. </p>

<p>May 1st is known as the “common reply date”. Most colleges in the US agreed on this one set date, so that students can make fair decisions - compare financial aid offers - and then decide.</p>

<p>If you need an extension, you can ask for one. But contact them immediately.</p>
