The restrictions are there...I tried my best to keep food and things in the room. It actually depends on the people around them, they should be able to distinguish whether or not it's safe. I was surrounded by some hard-asses, eventhough relaxed m/n will still probably confiscate goods just because they can eat it themselves. Hiding contraband is a skill well polished by the end of plebe year.

LOL and since you are no longer a Plebe and are well skilled in the hiding of contraband you should be an excellent finder of it for the plebes this year!

Right now, I have 4 boxes of Duncan Hines brownie mix, a carton of eggs, oil, and $22 worth Symphony candy bars to make Paula Dean's brownies here on my kitchen counter. Are you serious? NO FOOD UNTIL AFTER ACCEPTANCE/PARENTS WEEK-END????

oh send it, worst case if they fess up to having it they will have to pass it out to the plebes in their company.

I just baked brownies, cookies and muffins for a platoon of 40. I am going up to mass tomorrow and bringing everything with me. If they say he can't have it I think I will cry. Why are there so many different opinions on the rules. Is it that some DIs alllow certain rules to be bent and some don,t. He said in his letter to send cookies so I'm assuming others have received them. Well, I'll see tomorrow.

:p :p "I'm certain they can't have it. So, instead of letting it go to waist, er, waste.... Please forward thouse yummy-sounding brownies and other treats down to me in NC ! I'll, ummmm, perform Quality Control testing !!!

Ok. ok . Not really. We're sending stuff....
If he gets it, fine. If he has to share it....
Well, that's why we're sending quite a bit.

I am sending 64 cookies. I am sure the sharing is what my son will like best. Hope he gets at least one.

Anyone have a kid doing cross country & track? Last year I recall the coach wasn't happy about the unhealthy kind of boodle that parents were sending. The kids asked for certain kinds of health snacks & were allowed to have the extra food for the calories needed to train & compete. One Dad told me of a certain kind of power bar that was suggested to send. Can't recall the name of it. Packages of tuna were allowed I think. Don't forget to send a fork...

My kid musta been a regular ghost when it came to keeping his Goldfish & cans of Pringles hidden. :D

An excerpt from PARENTS GUIDEBOOK '07: ("What do you mean he doesn't have Telephone Privileges??? This is his MOTHER!" aka A Guide for Plebe Candidates and Midshipmen Families Written from the Heart by a Kings Point Mom)

Send "care" packages every week or so, at least in the beginning - NOT UNTIL YOU HAVE RECEIVED THE POSTCARD FROM THEM SAYING "OKAY TO SEND FOOD." They are appreciated like nothing else. It's better to send small care packages more frequently than a large package. Remember that your Midshipman won't have much storage space. Include zip lock bags for proper storage of food. (Remember, that packing of popped popcorn is a better choice than "foam", but don't salt, butter, etc. as "spiced" packing tends to spoil in shipment and attract critters.) It doesn’t cost much more to send packages "Priority" and the midshipmen usually get those packages in about 3-4 days.

And another from PLEBE PARENTS TIPS '07:
For Plebe Parents – Useful Things to Know... Submitted by David R. Brune, Region 4 Vice President and formerly President, Mid-Atlantic Parents' Club (MD, Northern VA, Wash., DC) (Updated June 2, 2007 by USMMA Parents Association Staff) Approved by Commandant of Midshipmen, Capt Robert Allee`

Send mail from all friends and relatives during Indoc AND into the year. Recruit EVERYONE to send funny and inspirational mail so they get something every day if possible. Do NOT send “stuff” until September Acceptance Day. Food is ok to send the second week but be sure to send at least 2 dozen (5 dozen is better) of whatever to share. These packages are considered community property and will be immediately consumed upon opening. Many little notes & things via mail are better than saving up and sending one big package. You may send school supplies and computer-related accessories after Indoc. Do not send games/movies until parent's weekend – they simply don't need the distraction.

Got my 5 min phone call this morning. Son said they got their computers but not allowed to use them until tomorrow (Monday). He also said he was told AIM still not working so use yahoo, maybe they will have AIM working 100% soon!

got phone call this morning as well. same as suzanegra. (AIM uses different router ports than Yahoo- but yahoo doesn't offer video). son said he had a new roommate, as indoc had "ended" (His words).
also said they are to get their cell phones back, only to use them on sundays.

Same here....voice still raspy but great to hear from him. Reports that he needs his buck knife (?) and a sport watch. Also that he'll be able to make unsupervised phone calls next week. Was surprised that the cheer competition video was posted on youtube but excited to know that we saw it. He was also surprised to know that we watched the live feed. He calls himself a lousy seamstress. I guess I dropped the ball on that one as I never once taught him how to sew. His sister...yes. Anyhow, I have soooo many coulda, woulda, shoulda things filling my brain at night. But it was really great to hear his voice and to know that I'll be hearing more soon.

LOL and our boys were roommates and neither could sew? What I wouldn't give to be a mouse in that hall during sewing sessions! Xan did not mention anything about new roomate yet, but he did say today was the last day of indoc. and he said he got to go out on the Scooner as well as off shore boats which he thought was really awesome.

Way to go kawalla!!!! We received our call at 6am Pacific time this morning. I didn't think to mention me saw the cheer competition, but he didn't know we watched the indoc parade either. He received the brownies and rice crispy treats. I'm amazed; I mailed them on Wednesday and I was worried they might sit over the weekend. I was so happy to know they arrived already. He told us they switched roommates already. His roommate is a plebe from Oregon, but didn't say his name. They were supposed to get their computer today and he would try to IM us if he gets it set up. We asked him if he had his Box #, but he had not yet received that. He also asked us to send his cell phone. Cell phone use was ok on Sundays standing in the hall at attention. (3rd Company, 2nd Battalion).

Yeah, Kayleen! I am surprised that my son hasn't asked for his phone yet. Any other 2 co parents had cell phone requests?

Any chance of sharing Paula Deen's recipe, it sounds interesting.

Absolutely! It's actually "directions" not a recipe, so easy! Leave it to Paula to come up with something so fabulous! Two boxes Duncan Hines family size brownie mix and three Symphony 7 oz chocolate bars (almond toffee) They don't sell these chocolate bars in grocery stores, you have to go to CVS.

Mix brownie mixes separately acc to package directions. Spray 13 x 9 pan with PAM. Spread one brownie mixture in pan. Lay the Symphony bars on top, covering pan. Pour second batch brownie mixture over top of Symphony bars. Bake acc to package directions. Watch edges to prevent burning. Let cool before slicing.

Sounds wonderful, Thanks!

Do they call at different times? Didn't hear from our son this morning.

I'm getting worried, too. We heard last week before 11am. Today, nothing.
