When is the latest one can apply at U of M?

I need someone to explain to me how these deadlines work.

It says on the UofM TC website that December 16, 2013 is the "Priority deadline for fall 2014 admission applications".

My daughter who is a senior now, is trying to improve her GPA and ACT scores. I am confident by the end of her 2nd term (end in Jan 2014), her GPA should go up by 0.2. She is also taking the ACT in Sept/Oct, may take the Dec test also(though everyone says it is late). She is trying hard, and I don't see any reason to discourage her.

So, what are the options here:

Must she apply before Dec 16, then send in the updated GPA (and ACT scores if she takes it again in Dec) sometime in Jan?

UofM TC CBS/CSE being very competitive, she doesn't have any chance anyway for early admissions with her current GPA/ACT scores. So, would she be denied without having a chance to send the improved scores?

My hope is that, she can get at least wait listed with the improved scores. If at all, she is wait listed when will we come to know?

Next best option I think is UMD (Duluth). Will it be a separate application for UMD or a single application for all UofM campuses? How does it work in terms application/acceptance etc with UMD vs UMTC?

If at all, she is not accepted at UofM, then I guess she has to apply at St. Cloud or Mankato. When are the usual deadlines for these colleges?

Sorry about all the questions. It's our 1st kid going to the college, we never gave it a careful thought before because college was not an option earlier, (may be a community college was). But now, I am determined to send her to the UofM if at all possible. She can have a career we never had. That's the idea.
Appreciate your advice/guidance. And thank you so much for the amount of knowledge on this forum.

Russell2002…What is your daughter interested in majoring in? What is her current GPA and test scores? That info may help folks to answer some of your questions. In the meantime…

[Academic Profile](Academic Profile of Fall 2022 Admitted Freshman Applicants by College | Office of Admissions)

Here is a link to the profile of admitted students for the Fall 2013 Semester. You can compare your D’s stats to those listed here. As you know, CBS and CSE are the most difficult colleges at UM-TC to gain admission to, so if her stats aren’t already near the median for those colleges a slight increase probably won’t help her chances markedly. Does her desired area of study require her to be admitted to CBS or CSE, or are there majors within CLA or one of the other colleges that might interest her? Which colleges at UM-TC are her stats most competitive for?

If she can gain admission to any of the colleges at UM-TC, there is always a possibility that she can transfer into a different college once she’s there assuming she achieves high enough grades in her college courses.

Regarding the deadlines, it’s usually beneficial to meet any priority deadlines to improve your chances for admission. You can always send in additional updated transcripts and test scores if they improve her overall application. If she’s a borderline applicant, it’s possible that she might get waitlisted and the U may request additional information themselves. In previous year’s threads, I don’t particularly recall students getting waitlisted early on in the process though. It seemed like some students found themselves in “limbo” where their application status online showed as completed and under consideration for extended periods of time.

I would think your D’s best bet would be to apply early to a college that her stats are competitive for. If she’s close for CBS or CSE she can take a shot, but make sure she lists CLA or one of the other colleges as an alternate choice if she finds something there she might be interested in studying.

I believe UMD has it’s own application so that would need to be done separately. I have no knowledge of St Cloud or Mankato, so I’m afraid your on you own there. Good Luck to you and your D!!

I definitely recommend she do the Sept AND October test, December is definitely too late. I’m pretty sure the U of M accepts on a rolling basis, so anyone who does not meet the deadline will only be considered on a space-available basis. With a school as popular as the U of M, I do not think there are very many (if any) spaces left unfilled after the priority deadline since the application is so easy and quick to do. Depending on her current GPA and her Sept/Oct ACT score I would apply as soon as possible. 0.2 points is nice but not worth the risk of not being considered for admission. Check out the profile Wolverine86 posted to compare to your daughter’s stats. It’s very easy to transfer from CLA to CBS/CSE as far as I know, provided she does well in her classes. Good luck!

Thank you Wolverine and hville.

She has a GPA of 3.2 UW with lot of APs, NHS, lot of volunteer work. She didn’t do well in June ACT because she was sick, she has a mid 20s ACT score. She is PSAT commended scholar because she missed the the semi-finalist cutoff narrowly. She is working hard now, I think 30 is within reach if she keeps it up until Oct. By end of 1st term i.e. Nov, her GPA will probably be 3.3. By the end of 2nd term i.e. Jan, it will probably be 3.4 as one ‘F’ she had in junior year will go away.

She is not sure what she wants to major in, but probably it will be sciences.

When you say, apply early, you mean apply before Dec 15 right?

So if her scores/GPA are not good enough for the colleges she applied, how does that work? Will they deny the admission straightaway? Or it will be on hold for few weeks, so she will have an opportunity to send her 2nd term GPA (and Dec ACT scores if she takes it)? First of all, does anyone re-submit the scores after 2nd term?

Here is my dilemma. Let’s say, if she improves her ACT to higher 20s or a 30 by Oct, then why to stop there? Why not take it again in Dec if that can add a couple of points? That way, she just may have a chance at CSE.

Thank you for the Academic Profile link. It seems CLA may be within her reach. Is there a link for UMD Academic Profile? I couldn’t find it on UMD web site.

Thank you and appreciate your help.

At least when I was applying, I had the option to send my application to other UMN campuses too at no charge. Not sure if they still do that.
