Mine is coming closer, so i wanted to know, if somebody else is going to be there too.
June 9th!!!!!!!!!!

July 2 ( i think) I’m an University Scholar.

(Transfer dates are in June, and the freshman dates start in July.)

Chris

July 9th… I hope I get my first choice classes.

july 17th…=-/ kinda late

Even if you do not get your first choice of classes at first, put yourself on a waitlist. Most classes end up opening up with a few seats as the beginning of the semester draws closer. Just keep checking (on SOLAR). Good luck!

I’m transferring to SB in the fall as a junior and my orientation date is June 23rd.

Any info on these orientation sessions people have gone to already??? What was it like? I don’t go until June 23rd and I am a junior transfer and I am nervous all the classes are going to be filled up by the time I get to pick! Was the orientation informative?

Mine is june 18th, I’ll let you know how it goes.

I have all my classes picked out, all the DECs I picked have over 30 seats available so I should get those, but my major classes I want to take have between 1 and 4 left open. I’m pretty nervous.

Wow, you’re making me nervous now too!!! I hope there’s something left by the 23rd! Not lookin’ too good! Let me know how you do (I appreciate it!) and good luck!

I understand you guys, I was very nervous that I would not get the classes I need.
I went Tue July 9th at 12:30! I had a good time.
First when I got there I got a Target binder and some other papers and then I sat down in the ball room (i think). We were all split up in 3 groups (A,B and C).
I took my picture for the ID and in case you have not sent in your health info you have to talk to a nurse. I had lunch and then a presentation. The guy keept repeading himself a little, but it was ok and I guess I learned some new stuff.
After that the orientation leaders brought us upstaires and was able to talk to somebody from the math department. They have peaple there from the science programms to talk to you about the programm or evaluate your transcript etc.
after that I had one on one advisment and after that registered for classes.
Following the registration they had a lecture for eather comuter or resident students.
The scedule is different for each group. Group A is first with the individual advisment, than B and than C.
In the end I got all the classes I wanted.
MAT200, MAT211, AMS361, SSE350 and HIS393
I knew that there were only 4 seats left in MAT200, so I hoped I would get in and when I was home I checked and the class is closed now, so I was very lucky.
If there are a lot of seats left you should not have any problems, but with only a few you might need a backup.
Good Luck for you.
Let me know how it went!

Thanks for all that info, Sugababe!!! I’ll wait to hear what happens now with JimmyME, who is going the 18th. I am sure classes are going to be pretty limited by the time I go but I’ll just have to make the best of it! I’ll be taking what’s leftover! I’ll let everyone know what happens. About how many people do they have at the orientation at one time? I know you said there were 3 groups- about how many in each group? Did you meet a lot of people? Thanks for all the help everyone!

My orientation date is July 31st…
From what I can assume from reading other people’s date, this is EXTREMLY late. I’m going to get stuck with awful classes, aren’t I?
GREAT

What is your major pitbull? How does your class sizes look in solar?

I’m an English major so maybe there will be classes left! I know a lot of people go to SB for the sciences and math and psychology. And to PBrentino who is going to orientation July 31st, I’m a transfer student coming in as a junior so that is why I am so worried about classes filling up quickly. I assume all the SB juniors picked their classes for the fall already.

Skip the registration session, trust me. They treated me like an idiot when I was registering as if I didn’t take any responsibility in researching all my classes for my major beforehand which everyone should do. They take off the hold on your account on that day, but I’m not sure if they do it in the morning or a few hours or a few minutes before the registration (I think maybe an hour or two before the registration time). In any case, I would make sure to add all the classes you want into your SOLAR system course “Shopping cart” the morning before you leave for the orientation and tell someone (your parents or someone at a computer while you’re at stony brook) to keep checking till they remove the hold and then they can click “Process” and it’ll add all the classes in your shopping cart to your schedule. I’d skip the registration session and go the registrar’s computers (or a free computer in the computer lab in the main library that doesn’t require a login) to check it. I got locked out of one class I needed at freshman and had to sneak my way later by constantly checking on SOLAR for someone to drop out and snatch the open spot. Really a pain in the a$$.

Wow, I was hoping somebody at my registration would help me pick the classes I need and guide me, but I can see that they aren’t too helpful as you are saying, inno89. This really sucks. I am going to orientation this coming Tuesday, I was hoping THEY would tell me what to take and what classes are open. I am not 100% sure what I need as I am transferring and already have an AS degree and I wanted pre-law counseling to see what they offer and what would be helpful for me to take. I will let everyone know what happens Tuesday!

hi pitbulls3,
the advisor I had was very helpful told me which dec to take and they also have lists with all open classes.
I made sure that I knew which classes I wanted to take before I got to orientation because you never know what kind of advisor you get.
I met the director of my program and she told me which major classes to take.
Good Luck

Thanks, Suga, I hope I get a helpful advisor also. I don’t think I will just skip the whole registration session like inno says to do. Maybe I will be lucky! I did start looking at open classes in the English department and there are plenty still available (even if some of the times of the classes was sucky!). Hey, I’ll take what I have to when I can! I am just not sure what classes I need for my BA and wanted help with that and also I was hoping they could steer me towards some pre-law classes. I will let you know how it goes- it’s coming soon- Tuesady!!!

My take on Orientation.

I had my Oreintation in the afternoon. I started off by checking in and then filling out a form and getting a picture taken for my student ID.

I was then off to about a 15 minute lunch followed by some guy talking for about an hour, maybe an hour and 15 minutes, which I tuned out and was totally useless and boring. After that it was off to academic advising followed by registration.

While you wait around for your advisor there are plenty of oreintation staff around to talk to you, tell you about the University, answer questions, very informative.

My advisor was absolutely awesome. The advisement was 1 on 1 and she moved quickly and was extremely helpful in picking out my classes. I recommend that you try and pick out the classes you want to take or at least get a general idea by looking in SOLAR. I cant stress how much being prepared and knowledgable about your program helps the advising process. Read your major’s bulletin, make sure you understand everything in it. If you don’t understand something, write down any questions you may have on a seperate sheet of paper.

There was one advisor who when he walked out to the waiting area to find his student seemed like a total jerk, maybe that is the person inno89 got, but most of the advisors looked nice and helpful.

After that you go to registration where you have basically sit down at a laptop with an orientation person (basically a student), log into SOLAR and register for your classes. If you know how to use SOLAR it takes less than 2 minutes to register.

Then it was pretty much over, there was a commuter presentation which I attended because I am going to commute and it was only a half hour, I learned some good stuff, but it was optional.

I actually had a great orientation experience. One more thing, make sure you have filled out and faxed your health form, there was a huge line for that, and it looked absolutely miserable to be on.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me / ask.
