When on a waitlist that isn't tremendously competitive...

... Can I expect to be strung along for awhile, or is there likely a flat out rejection in my near future?

I'm waitlisted, and while I (obviously) don't like it, I'm willing to sit out for a semester or two if I must. I'm just not sure if I can expect the waitlist letter I received last month to be followed up with a "Thanks, but no thanks" in March or April or if they'll string me along. I know every situation is unique, but... if I'm told that they like me but they're waiting for more apps, is that more out of honesty or courtesy?

Thanks.

A waitlist is just that – a waitlist. Your admission will depend on whether a sufficient number of admitted candidates decline the university’s offer.

Yessir.

What I’m wondering is, if they find a number of candidates they believe to be stronger than me, if they’ll simply reject me or tell me to wait and check back another semester.

Rejection will follow if an insufficient number of admitted candidates decline.

Ah. Understood. I was hoping it’d be like it is in some undergraduate cases, but at least I know.
