A bad death isn’t going to change things, though the recent worry about measles is hopefully going to get people at least thinking.
Twenty babies died in California last year from pertussis. That should have scared people. I’m cynical. And sad.

I agree that the overall infant mortality rate of American children is a national embarrassment.

Rates by state.

OK, now, just so we don’t have people popping up saying that we can’t believe the US infant mortality statistics because we count them differently than other countries, remember that the US also has a shameful maternal mortality rate. It’s high, and it’s rising:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/maternal-deaths-in-childbirth-rise-in-the-us/2014/05/02/abf7df96-d229-11e3-9e25-188ebe1fa93b_story.html
Maternal mortality is the death of a woman relating to childbirth: stroke during labor, bleeding to death, heart problems, other pregnancy-related causes.
This makes very little sense to me. No one is forced to read this thread and if merely seeing it at the top every day is enough to annoy you, maybe you are too easily annoyed.
Better than yet another “Chance me” or “Why don’t we qualify for more financial aid?” thread!
I for one am happy to see this thread continue. I have relatives and friends whom I respect (otherwise) who are anti-vaccine (or at least strong advocates for choosing not to vaccinate), and I really want to understand how in the world that can be a justifiable stance for them to take. Still have not gotten there, however.
You could always just ignore it…
Personally, I’ll stop being hysterical when I don’t have to worry about idiots not vaccinating their children.
And yes, I do mean idiots. Not only am I not afraid of offending them, I sincerely hope I offend and shame them.
@churchmusicmom What explanation do your friends have?
I don’t go into the “Are you ready for football” thread and say “Is this thread ever going to die? I keep seeing it pop to the top every day”. If you don’t want to read it, there’s plenty of other threads around. Why so offended?
By the way, disability rights advocates are finally coming out in disgust of the anti-vaxxers. They are calling a spade a spade and asking why you’d rather let your child potentially die and kill others than “risk” Autism.
Here’s a great book to add your your home library:
"Stephanie Messenger’s “Melanie’s Marvelous Measles” was written to show children the supposed “benefits of having measles” and outlines natural healing methods, such as eating fruits and vegetables.
In the book, Melanie contracts measles despite being vaccinated; whereas, her unvaccinated friend Tina is not infected with the virus even though they happily hug each other and play together."
Just wow.
“Its title is an apparent parody of Roald Dahl’s “George’s Marvelous Medicine,” likely mocking his 1988 plea to other parents to vaccinate their children against measles 26 years after losing his eldest daughter, Olivia, to the disease.”
Just wow.
^ The 5 star reviews are hysterical. For example…
“As a carpenter who specializes in itty bitty coffins I can’t say enough good things about this book, my customer base has been growing at an epidemic rate!”
"Don’t overlook the lesser known Dr. Seuss books in this series - “Horton hears an air raid siren”, “Oh the places you’ll itch”, “How the Grinch caught Chlamydia “, “And to Think That I Contracted It on Mulberry Street”, “Skull Fracture Mayzie”, “Hop on your remaining foot”, " The 500 days in ICU of Bartholomew Cubbins”, and “If I Ran the Mortuary”.”
“Ever since the rumors started circulating that Messenger would be writing a prequel to her runaway hit “Melanie’s Mother Mourns at the Mortuary,” my family and I have been on the edge of our seats. Which entirely preventable, nearly-eliminated disease would be the cause of Melanie’s mother’s misery?..”
The most head-scratching part of the “is this thread ever going to disappear?” comment is the implied false equivalence between “both sides.” meanwhile, I gift you all this:
http://robertmoorejr.■■■■■■■■■■/post/110101466091/im-an-anti-braker
in which an anti-braker makes his case. ya welcome.
Hey, this is “my” thread! And the topic is important. No one is making you read it.
garland, that is beautiful.
If tranquil wants to see a thread that wont die, better viewing is the Race in college admissions thread. Its on its 11th iteration.
Sue22, those 5 star reviews are hilarious. Who would think there could be so many morbidly funny things on this completely serious thread?
@garland Great link.
I was so enraged by Melanie’s Marvelous Measles that I wrote a kids’ book featuring the less awesome, miserable measles: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jd-rothman/the-antivax-rat_b_6610512.html
