When SAT IIs are recommended, not required

I want to submit by ACT score to Northwestern and Johns Hopkins - both of which "recommend" you take "up to three" subject tests regardless of whether you send your SAT or ACT.

I'm signed up for the subject tests in French and Lit, and I'm expecting somewhere in the 700s. I could technically take a math subject test, but I definitely cannot guarantee I'll get anywhere close to a 700. Would only submitting two subject tests look bad, even though technically none are REQUIRED? I'd rather have only two good scores than an inconsistent mix of three...

I don’t think submitting 2 would look bad if “up to 3” (i.e. 1, 2, or 3) are RECOMMENDED. It doesn’t even say they flat out recommend 3, just up to 3.

Isn’t Johns Hopkins an engineering school? I bet their expecting atleast some math or science SATs

Yeah, but I want the Writing Seminars major. So I doubt they care.

And I just relooked, Hopkins says “up to three” but NU just says “three are recommended” But, I’m looking at Medill for journalism, so again, I doubt math is as important.
