I’m a Sophomore now becoming a Junior in high school. And I’m not sure when should I start applying to colleges. I do want to get my gpa up before I start applying because it is only a 3.5 now. So should I wait until it’s up to par or should I start applying now in my junior year?
Few institutions have a junior year application option. Wait until senior year.
If you are planning on entering college after you graduate from high school (sounds like you’ll graduate in 2019) then you typically don’t start applying to college until around August of your senior year (2018). This may vary by school, but many schools don’t open applications until then.
You apply in your senior year. Relax.
You typically apply between August before senior year and December 1st to January 15th. You’ve got plenty of time to raise your GPA.
The Common App opens on August 1 before your Senior year
Work this year on getting your GPA where you want it to be. And on building relationships with at least 2 teachers who can write you solid letters of recommendation
Next summer:
Get to work on your essay(s). Make sure you’ve requested letters of recommendation and that you’ve given the writers a “brag sheet” to make it easier to write.
But the odds are overwhelming that the College Placement Office in your high school won’t be ready to send transcripts until at least September-- most of the people working there will be enjoying the same summer vacation you will.
