I don't know when the orientation date is, but I was thinking of going 8/31 because that's the move in date, and plane tix will get really expensive if I don't order them sooner... Is the orientation later than the move-in date?

No, absolutely not. Do not book them yet.

Orientation is spread over every weekend during the summer. Depending on your college, you’ll get a choice of a couple of days. The only people who have orientation at the very, very end of the summer (and could therefore stay in Boston between orientation and move-in theoretically) are international students and people who petition for it. Chances are strong that your orientation will be in June, July or early August and then your move-in will be early September. Orientation is required.

Also- move-in dates are different for every dorm. They are spread over a week before classes start, and missing your move-in is really complicated. Moving in early is painful to manage as a freshman (and there are fees/requirements as an upperclassman). So if you fly in too early, you’ll have to stay in a hotel for ages. BUT it’s top three (that, graduation and parent’s weekend) busiest hotel times for Boston… So you’ll be paying super high hotel fees and it’ll be hard to book extra nights.

Yeah, plane tickets will go up. But it’s expensive to book without knowing your exact dates.
