hi I’m a student at st. Francis college heading into my junior year. My major is currently political science, but I’ve recently decided that that field doesn’t interest me anymore and I’ve been Thinking of changing it to computer science (st Francis calls it IT), as well as a minor in film (though they call it communication arts). Considering that my classes start in just a few weeks and my courseload can’t be changed (and the tuition is already paid for), would i be better suited to wait until the semester ends to change it?
Also: I know it’s gonna cost me a few more years in college, but I figured better late than never.
Why can’t your courseload be changed? Usually (if there is space available) you can change during the drop/add period.
Given that you are a junior…is there a way you can combine the two? Look at Big Data or Management Information Science (https://www.sfc.edu/academics/undergraduate/mit) so you look at how you can use data/computing in the context of politics?
Talk to your adviser about how to approach this…would it be better just to take some computer programming courses at this point but finish your major?
What is your end goal? Would you be interested in data mining for political use?
Look at the courses you have taken and see if you can create a new interest major without having to spend more time in college. I like to see additional time and money generate a graduate degree, if at all possible.
As a liberal arts college student, I became interested in business. I was on time-constrained scholarship and did not have money switch my major and stay longer. I got a minor in marketing, graduated and worked. My employer provided tuition reimbursement and I went back to school and got an MBA concentrating in finance.
Changing your major takes some time, and effort (advisor meetings, dept head forms, etc). You have probably figured out by now that it would have been impossible to do before classes started this year. Hopefully you are working on the change now…don’t wait until super close to registration time for next semester.
One of the key things you should consider is when to change your major. If you are within your first 60 credits, you have a better chance of moving your credits .
