When should I hear back from the University of Minnesota?

I applied to Minnesota in midaugust and all of my application materials were sent in by mid September. I’m a little worried because I haven’t heard anything yet, and it’s been a while. Some of my friends have already been accepted and they applied after me. I applied into the College of Biological Sciences.
GPA 5.3 w 3.8 uw
Class Rank- 24 of 433
ACT-28
Taken 5 AP classes: calc, lit, Lang, psych, bio
All other class were either honors or accelerated

I’m in NHS, NSHSS, do volunteering at the cancer center, did varsity track and cross country my sophomore and freshman years, also I do many things in music including multiple bands and jazz groups and I am in the Milwaukee youth symphony orchestra along with the Wisconsin state honors band, I also work part time.

My daughter applied the same time as you and all application materials were received by early October. She applied to CBS as well. Her GPA is 3.7 and 26 ACT and we have not heard anything either :frowning:

@clarinet1 and @dancermom79 - Unfortunately, the mid 50% range of ACT scores for CBS is higher than 26 or even 28. That doesn’t mean your students won’t get in, but the likelihood isn’t great. The stats should be high enough for CLA, however (assuming your students specified that college as their second choice). Having delivered the sobering news, I now share some that’s a bit more hopeful: if you haven’t heard anything yet, that could mean they are still deciding.

Good luck to you both!

And even if they are accepted to their second choice, they can apply to CBS after taking some classes.

I found out that I got accepted December 1st. It really depends on where you live/caseload of admissions officer.
28 ACT
3.91 GPA.

I found out December 21st that I was accepted to CBS. It depends on your extracurriculars and they really looked st if I answered the essay questions or not.
Act: 27
GPA: 3.9

That’s great news for those waiting with the low’ish ACT scores. @tcmnlover are you able to provide a bit more detail: in-state or OOS, do you have any any hooks, etc.? Thanks!

PS it also proves that UMN does look at more than the stats!

I am an in state student! I’m also a first generation college student and as it says on the course requirements I did not complete a physics course but was still accepted! It goes to show that they definitely do look at more than just gpa and act scores! Hope this helps!

Someone else on another thread has a daughter who didn’t get into Carlson due to lack of a physics course. Could be that first generation status trumps physics.

I applied to the CBS in early October and received my acceptance letter about a week or so before Thanksgiving. My ACT score is 30, and my GPA (my school does a 100 point scale) is a 101.726. I’m an OOS from all the way on the east coast, which may have sped up their decision–schools love to say they have students from all 50 states.

Thanks guya! Still nothing back yet. It would suck if I didn’t get in considering I exceed in every area besides my ACT only being one point below the average. Does the ACT really play that big a role in considering me for admission?

@clarinet1 - take a look at this link for composite ACT of 2016 actual enrollees (not just admits). The 28 ACT was right at the 25th percentile last year, so there is still hope!

@JBStillFlying thank you!

I also still haven’t heard from University of Minnesota and I’m starting to wonder if I should be getting nervous. I applied to CBS in early October and have heard back from all of the other colleges I applied to at that time.

Stats:
34 Composite ACT (35 if you super score)
3.68 GPA (was a B and C student for much of my freshman year and sophomore year but was diagnosed with a learning disorder right before I started my junior year and after learning how to address these issues I became a straight A student…all of this was explained in my additional statement section)
Out-of-State Student from Illinois
Rigorous honors and AP course load all through high school
President of my school’s Business Professionals of America club
Volunteer in a special education classroom during my lunch period twice a week
Work as an assistant in a special education gym class where I have worked one-on-one with an Autistic boy who fostered my interest for Neurodevelopmental Disorders and led me to the major I am currently pursuing (this was the focus of my writing in my application)
Have placed top ten at Nationals for the past three years in Entrepreneurship for Business Professionals of America
Nominated by my school for the Presidential Scholar Award
Illinois State Scholar
Commended Scholar for PSAT

Should I be worried??? Given these stats what do you think my odds are for CBS admissions.

BONUS: another major concern of mine is that I only have half a semester of physics credit. After being diagnosed with a major medical issue the second semester of my junior year I have to miss nearly 40 days of school receiving treatment. Though I stayed up to date with my assignments for the class and learned the material, because my absences fell so close to the end of the school year and continued into the summer, I was unable to make up critical tests. Instead of giving me a low grade, as a result of getting 0s on the tests I couldn’t make up (including the final), my school gave me a no grade/ medical exemption. I explained the basics of the situation in my additional statement section as did my school counselor in her statement to the school but I am worried that because it explicitly states that for CBS you need bio, chem, and physics, this will impact my admissions decision.

@SJ0823 is your 3.68 GPA weighted or unweighted?

@JBStillFlying Weighted

@sj0823 do you know your un-weighted, or can you calculate it?

@sj0823: many colleges with strong biology have Jan 15 deadlines (St Olaf, Dickinson, Lawrence, Denison, Earlham, Butler, Creighton…), do apply to a few just in case.

My current senior (in-state, 3.7 UW GPA & 35 ACT) was accepted to CSE in early December after applying sometime in late October or early November, I believe.

@clarinet1 and @SJ0823 My advice is to check your online portal as well as call and get verbal confirmation from admissions that all of your application materials have been accepted. Last year, my son applied in September (to CSE, 3.7 UW GPA and 35 ACT), got the email saying his application was complete, and then waited and waited and WAITED to hear back, after friend after friend got their notices all around him. He finally thought to check his portal thingie which said that his application status was on hold because the U had never received his official transcripts (!!!). We went to our school’s GC who pulled up the screen on her computer and showed us her screen in the online tool the U uses – saying the U received his official transcripts way back in September!!! At this point, it was mostly an exercise in curiosity since he had already been accepted ED at his first choice (Webb Institute on Long Island) so he didn’t follow up again. He finally was accepted around MAY 15th !!! Something crazy was going on at the U in their systems, clearly.

Just our little anecdote to anyone waiting to hear – be proactive and don’t wait to be sure they have all your app materials. Don’t trust their confirming email after you apply. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

@mnparentof3 - I’m betting that had UMN been higher on his list a simple phone call would have cleared that up pronto and well before May 15. The big issue would have been scholarship eligibility because they can always accept one more but can’t necessarily hand over money that’s already been doled out. So yeah, ALWAYS check your portal or tracker or whatever it is.

Same thing happened to the daughter of a friend of ours who applied to Michigan, btw. Her “accept” appeared on her portal within minutes after the issue got cleared up.
