When should I schedule my interviews?

So, I have four listed colleges which I want to schedule an interview. When is a good time for that? I'm applying reg decision to them, and will have sent the applications by December 20. Any help is appreciated.

My school's college counselor recommends that you do your interviews before November for RD, I believe... So yeah, any time between now and then, I guess! Although it might be helpful to do them at least a couple weeks after school has started, so you can talk about the current classes your taking, leadership roles you have, etc.

If you are referring to alumni interview, you do not schedule those interviews. They will contact you once they get your application. Do not be upset if you do not get an interview with some schools. Most likely it's because they do not have enough alumni to interview every applicant.

Oldfort, I disagree. It is acceptable to ask a school for an alumni interview before you submit or they receive your application. In fact, some schools don't even allow alumni interviews to take place once you submit your application.

So, should I contact the schools I want to apply to and schedule an interview if they allow it?

My daughter was interviewed at all 10 schools AFTER she submitted her applications. They will contact you, not the other way around.

scared6378 - where are you in your process? Why would a school interview you before you submit your application?

^^
At Rice at least you can apply for an interview online, before you send in an actual application.

To get an interview as soon as possible, it's best to submit your application electronically. It's the fastest way of getting into a school's database. Some schools will allow their alumni to go into their database to select applicants they want to interview. My daughter submitted her application to Duke on Christmas eve, she was notified for an interview 3 days later - I don't think it was done manually because the office was probably closed.

I am not familiar with Rice's process, but I wouldn't be surprised if you wouldn't get an interview until your application is actually in.

Yes I agree, I have contacted Harvard about the interviews and they told me they only interview students who have submitted their applications - after October 1st.

scared6378: the Ivy that I interview for only begins to schedule interviews after the application is complete and rec'd by the admissions office. Interviews are optional at my alma mater.

benham91: although you can request an alum interview, it largely depends on the available volunteers in your area. They would contact you to find a mutually acceptable time. If you're talking about on-campus interviews, then just do it whenever: your interview report will be put into your file awaiting the completion of your app.

Also, it's rare that early finishing RD applicants get interviewed before the new year -- we're busy with all the EA applicants who have an earlier deadline. Even if an RD applicant got his/her file in in October, they'd likely get interviewed in January or beyond.

Does skipping an interview with Alum reduce chances of acceptance?

No. Most of those interviews are informational. With that being said, it is not looked upon favorably if you turn down an interview, if it is a bad interview it may also have an impact. The only one that I know really matters is Harvard interview.
