When should I send my portfolio?

I plan on sending in an art portfolio to Brown as supplemental material for ED, but by when should I send it? It’s not completed yet, because I don’t feel my portfolio is strong enough yet (not enough good observational drawings and next to none original pieces), but I don’t want to send it too late…

Also, does anyone have any idea if I should send the portfolio via CD or slides? or should I just call the admissions office about this?

um...i thought they were supposed to be sent in by nov. 1st along with the other stuff

hahah, oh damn, I didn't see anything about supplements on the admission site... :(

My Son who is a freshman went ED last year and sent a CD under separate cover to the admissions office. I don't remember when he sent it exactly, but I want to say it was after the application was sent-but maybe by a week or two at the most. The admission office sent it to the appropriate people at the music dept for review. My advice would be to get it in soon and send it with a cover sheet and include your name and SS number etc on everything. I don't think it matters the format-whatever you think would be easy viewing.

thanks for the info :)

I sent my portfolio before Nov 1st but I didn't see anything on the website about it either.

My Son never received confirmation about his supplemental items. He knew it reached the correct dept. only after he had been accepted and received a letter from the chair of that dept. inviting him to come down and talk with him about continuing to pursue that activity. I imagine you can contact the admissions office after a couple of weeks to make sure they received your supplemental material, but I don't believe you will receive any written confirmation.

The adcoms start reviewing applications after Nov. 15th (when quarter reports are due) I believe . So I would say try to have everything in by the 15th.

There isn't anything about supplemental material. Just send it in ASAP. Well before decisions come out. An art portfolio is better than no art portfolio!

I was under the impression that the deadline was Nov. 1 for ED. I was going to submit a portfolio, but like you, did not complete it in time.

I am also fairly sure that Brown wants slides of your work.

or CDs for musical work

Prints are allowed.

Prospective Students [of Visual Arts].

Please include one sheet of 10-20 slides, or approximately 10 color prints of work, and a list of the pieces including title, size, and medium. We encourage drawings, paintings, collage, sculpture, photography, books and mixed media; we discourage the submission of ceramics, jewelry and other crafts.

The portfolio should be submitted to the Admissions Department at the time of application.

Portfolios will not be returned.

thanks!
I guess it's too late for ED round... getting 10-20 slides together will take time and I don't even have a lot of quality pieces done.

You really don't need 10-20. More like 5-10. And a crappy portfolio is better than no portfolio. Send one in!!

You can also send in prints. I did.

i sent in my slides about two weeks after the deadline and they were still looked at. i don't know how they figured into my application, but i did get a letter from the art department concerning the slides and involvement this year.
