I received my June SAT score today, which turned out well (1550: 760 EBRW, 790 Math, 6/6/6 Essay). However, I’m unsure exactly when I should send my score to NMSC.
Even though I am far above my state’s PSAT SSI with a 227, I’m not sure I want to send my scores yet because the Class of 2018 Semifinalist list has not been released, and doing so might seem pretentious. However, I do want to make sure NMSC has my score as quickly as possible, since that is one less thing to worry about heading into senior year.
Should I send them now or wait until they release the list?
Congrats on the SAT score! According to my school, the NMSC foundation sends national merit application materials to the school administration starting around August/September, so you should get in contact with your school’s administration about that. I’m not sure if you can just send your scores to NMSC without the lists getting announced.
If you are sending scores to schools, go ahead and send to NMSC. I cannot imagine there would be any issues, D sent hers with the free reports back in January.
National merit activities for the previous year (2016-17) have been completed by now and they are gearing up for 2017-18. Go ahead and send them. We sent my daughter’s scores in June last year, well before the new cut-offs were announced, and she was nowhere near a 227 (she cleared by a point - whew!). NMSC won’t think sending a 1550 for a 227 SI is pretentious in the least - you are clearly going to be named a semi-finalist and, in fact, they most likely have your filed started and can add your scores to that.
My S took SAT subject tests in June and he used one of his free score reports for NMSC. The report included his December SAT in addition to the June subject tests. At this point, it doesn’t really matter if you send or wait unless you’re planning to take subject tests in the fall and could use a free score report. You definitely won’t be alone in sending scores to NMSC ahead of semifinalist announcement, if you decide to get it out of the way now.
Do NOT rely on your school to send any scores. They need to be ordered from College Board. NMSC has it’s own code for that. From “Requirements and Instructions for SemiFinalists”:
“Also, it is your responsibility to file a request with the College Board SAT Program to have an official report of your SAT scores sent to NMSC (code 0085).” (#7)
@DavidPuddy, yes, you have to pay when you send the scores (unless you do it as one of your free ones when you sit for a test). Ordering the score report for NMSC is the exact same process as ordering for any college.
My kids use one of their free scores to send to NMSC every time they take the SAT even before their junior year. NMSC confirmes they keep all scores sent and then match them up if the student make NMSF at that point they only consider the highest score if multiple scores have been sent.
