I am trying to minor in CS, and I have to take CS70 or Math 55 somepoint before I finish my lower division requirements.

What is the best time to take CS70? Is it a good idea to take it with Prof Hillfinger's CS61B? Does anyone know anything about the workload of CS70?

CS70 can be taken at any time. I'd recommend taking it after CS61A, so during CS61B would be fine. It's a lighter load, since there's no lab. You will have a weekly problem set, lecture, and discussion. The problems can be difficult, though. Usually the math isn't so bad, but the reasoning can be hard (I know they sound similar, but in this case by math I mean the actual computations, while with reasoning I mean setting up the computation).

If you get a good professors, CS70 can be quite a fun course, too. The only piece of advice I have is to not purchase the book. I didn't realize it was only "recommended" so I purchased it, but in the end we literally did not use it. I don't think I ever even opened the book for reference. There might be one or two (literally) things in the book you'll go over in the course, but the book will never be referenced, so just save yourself the money.

I've heard CS70 is better, since it focuses on more interesting aspects of applying discrete math to CS. At the same time, I've heard it is like the "honors" version of Math 55, which means it's probably a bit harder. CS70 isn't really a hard course, though, so I would recommend it if you are a CS major.

I am a entering freshman for Fall '06... I got badly screwed over by Telebears and Math 55 is the only course I could take that is directly related to my major (I'm EECS).. Will I get trampled on by the sophomores and the juniors in the class grading-wise?

My advisor isn't allowing me to take Physics 7A until I complete Math 1A, despite having somewhat covered most of the concepts of 1A and 1B under the Indian system... There is no way Chem 1A fits into my schedule.. So as of now my schedule has Music 26AC, CS61A and Math1A... Would Math 55 make the courseload hard? I know people say 16 units is a lot for first sem but I want to give it a shot...

Math 55 is completely unrelated to Math 1A. Math 1A is basic calculus, Math 55 is discrete math. If you take Math 1B, then there'd be no point to taking Math 1A.

You think too highly of sophomores and juniors. Math 55 / CS 70 is not a hard class, so you should be fine.

That's fine. Music has no work (a one-page essay per week). CS 61A and Math 55 are moderate. I haven't taken Math 1A, so I don't know how that is, but those four should be easy to handle.
