I have been taking practice tests from the blue book and I've been in the low 2000s range and I really want to get at least a 2100 on my first try. And I'll be extremely busy with schoolwork once school starts.. so should I take it this year or in January of 2012? Thanks.

I suggest taking it first in Spring of Soph. year. Helps getting a focus on level of schools you should be looking at & gives you ample time to raise your score if need be.

If you’re a rising sophomore, I’d suggest for you to take it June 2012.
If you’re a rising junior, I’d suggest for you to take it January/March/June 2012.
If you’re a rising senior, I’d suggest for you to take it October 2011, and if you aren’t applying ED or EA (SCEA included), feel free to take it November 2011.

I’m a rising junior. Thanks!

what were your psats from sophomore year? If they were in the range (multiply by 10) Id take SATs Jan of your junior year. If you don’t like them you can repeat in March before AP testing hits in May and Sat IIs hit in June. that gives you two tries in the junior year and you can try again in the fall of your senior year. More than three tries is unlikely to help you anyway. Or if you don’t like the Jan SATs then try the ACT.
