I have a customer who would like to transfer Fall 2015 from community college. According to UIUC website, if she has less than 30 transfer hours at the time of application they will consider her HS transcript, ACT score, AND college transcript. She currently has 29 hours. If she waits until after this semester is over she will of course have more than 30 hours and, according to UIUC website, only her college transcript would be considered. Her high school GPA is good, 3.75 UW, but ACT was questionable at 25 composite. Her current college GPA is 3.48, and after this semester should be a minimum of 3.52. So what do you all think - apply now or wait until after this semester is over?

I would wait, particularly if you believe current GPA will actually rise a little. Applying early or later makes no difference as long as you apply by February 1 (that is the end of the prioirty filing date for transfers and if you file by that date you will be considered for honors classifications before any of those who apply later).

I think this heavily depends on which college you are applying to - UIUC engineering and especially business (average transfer GPA > 3.8) are very competitive in terms of transferring. For other schools, it is less the case. If you’re worried about getting in, I would wait and try to get that GPA up. It’s either that or study and retake the ACT and try to get 30+.

Financially, you’re better off waiting of course but I find that the earlier you transfer, the better - it will take 1-2 semesters to adapt to many, many uncertainties that will inevitably come up (I speak from experience as a transfer student) so you want to give yourself enough time to succeed both academically and professionally.

She is applying to LAS Psychology. You have both echoed our initial feelings too. Thank you!
