When should we hear back?

UT Direct says that they're currently reviewing my app: does this mean i should expect a decision relatively soon? im OOS so im not top 8% or anything, and my app was processed on 12/1. if anyone could give me a rough estimate of when I might hear back, thatd be great!

I think UT Direct will say that from the time you submit your app until they make a decision. Usually review admission decisions happen in February (mid to late, I think). Good luck!!

My S received a letter on 12/23/10 stating “… because of your excellent record I can assure you now that you’ll be admitted to the university. With this assurance of admission, you need not wait to notify family and friends that you will be a Longhorn.” It goes on to state, however, “We’re hopeful that you’ll be accepted into one of your preferred majors” so it is not a guarantee that he will be admitted into his intended major (Engineering) at this time. We’re OOS (CA).

@jShain: Here is what I think UT is doing. They are filling the class solely by class rank for instate students. Top 1%, 2%, and so on until they reach 75% capacity of the number of admissions they will grant. Then they are looking at the rest of the pool. Likely, out of state students will get preference over instate because they bring OOS $$$ with them and frankly, UT needs those $$$.

If you don’t mind, could you share your S’s stats?

@eaglemom

3.75 uw 4.5 w (11 AP’s total: 5-5-5-4-4 to date)
SAT I 2230 (800m, 670cr, 760w)
SAT II 800 mathII, 760 physics, 740 lit
Top 4% (school doesn’t rank but received “ELC” for the UC’s which is top 4%)
Full IB

I would think that UT is similar to our UC’s in how they treat in-state versus OOS applicants. Their loyalty is with in-state students, even though they get more money from OOS admits. If the stats are close with in-state applicants compared to OOS, they will take them because they are in-state.

fozworn, you may not hear back until late February. This page overviews the application review process. [Admission Decisions | Freshmen | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/freshmen/after-you-apply/decisions/) Hang in there, and good luck!

jshain, congrats on your son’s early admission–he has some great stats, no wonder UT wants him! He’ll probably have to wait a while to hear back from Engineering, perhaps even to late February, simply because Cockrell puts the majority of applications through holistic review (they accept few auto admits–Texas top 8% students–based solely on their class rank). The good news for your son is, Cockrell’s selective review increases the chance of admission for non-auto admits, including OOS students.

eaglemom: You don’t seem to be familiar with either HB 588 or SB 175. SB 175 regulates admissions policies for first-time freshmen that will matriculate at The University of Texas at Austin anytime from the 2011-2012 academic year until the 2015-2016 academic year. Per SB 175, at least 90% of all first-time freshmen must be Texas residents; the law requires that UT both offer and grant admissions to the Top 1%, 2%, 3%, etc. until three-quarter of those slots are filled. Thus, only 67.5% - 90% * .75 – of any first-time freshmen class will be composed of Texas residents admitted under the Top (integer) Policy – SB 175. SB 175 allows UT-Austin fill the remaining 10% of any first-time freshmen class with either out-of-state or international students.

I hope that your son receives a DS offer. If he does not, then have him check out the Freshman Research Initiative.

I am a recent graduate of one UT-Austin’s most respected honors programs.

@stantr: Thanks. That is the most helpful data I have seen on the admissions policy. Thanks for stating it so clearly. I didn’t find that anywhere in UT’s admissions information. Wonder why they don’t state that more clearly.

Thanks for the well wishes for my son. And congrats to you on graduating with honors!

S got a similar letter as jshain. SAT 2310, Math 800, Chem 800, Bi0 780, 3.75 W, 4.43 UW, top 4% in graduating class.

ah true thanks for all the help. and also grats to those who were accepted/children were accepted, those were some truly solid stats!

Hi, so I have applied as well, but as an international student. we dont do GPA or rankings at my school (there are only 50 kids in my grade) so I dont have that info but I got a 1810 on my SAT’s a 30 on my ACT’s and I am in the International Baccaulareate program getting all 6’s and 7’s with the exception of 2 5’s (thats like all A’s and A+'s but two B’s)
what are my honest chances of getting into UT Austin?
