When should we hear back?

yeah, I was just about to ask the same thing, about whether she was talking about university park or not. Also, I don't think you can make a judgment like that based on one admission response.

If anyone gets an interview for Chancellor's, let us know!

I have a question for the people who were awarded full tuition scholarships already:
(annaloves bananas, kcarls, maximus, cockatiel, candid8, nikkigirl)

I have been looking at Pitt's website about scholarships and just gathering some info about the school. My daughter is a sophomore in a New York State HS and just starting the VERY beginnings of thinking about where she might be interested in going. She's a very good student, hopefully that will continue! Anyway, after looking at the website about scholarships, it seemed to me that the only full tuition ones that don't "promote diversity" are the "honors tuition" which is for some students who interview for the Chancellor's but don't get it, or a couple other special ones for engineering or business.

For those of you who got full tuition already, are you in engineering or business OR do you somehow "promote diversity" for the school? I'm wondering what that means exactly? Would a student from New York State promote diversity or is that really pushing it since we are only 3.5 hours away from Pittsburgh? I know you who have gotten full tuition so far can't be the Chancellor's runners up since it sounds like the interviews haven't even happened yet.

Thanks for your help!

My son received the full honors tuition scholarship. He is top 1% of his class with 35 ACT and 2200 SAT. He is going to major in engineering. Engineering dept. gave him an additional $4,000 a year for four years. We are waiting to hear about the Chancellor's interview.

This is not necessarily true. My daughter received the honors tuition scholarship last year and chose not to pursue the Chancellor's. She is now a freshman at Pitt. She is doing very well there and loves it. (We are also New York residents, by the way, and she is not an URM.) My theory is that the full-tuition scholarship is offered to early applicants (meaning those who apply pretty early in the cycle, maybe October or November) and have above a 1450 (M, CR) SAT score. I doubt that the writing score is taken into consideration. I think fairly good grades are needed also. My daughter's high school doesn't provide ranking, so I can't speak to that. Also, my daughter is NMF, and I don't know if that made a difference or not.

And of course, scholarship criteria may change from year to year.

Similar story to MTnest. S has same scholarship offers and is not a URM. SAT M & CR 1450+, but top 5% and lots of research. He applied for admission in Nov. Although invited to apply, did not go for the Chancellor.

I got the full tuition and applied for Chancellor's. I didn't apply for engineering or business, so that wasn't a factor. I'm also not a URM, legacy, or first-generation college student. As you can see from my location, I'm OOS. At a certain point, I think high stats will push you over the top. Then again, I've been wrong before.

By the way, has anyone heard about their Chancellor's interviews yet?

I don't really think that I "promote diversity." I live in Ohio and I'm about 2.5 hours away so I don't think that distance away from the school has much to do with it. I think my ACT score and grades got me the scholarship. I felt good about my essay and attached a list of extracurriculars. I had decent reccomendations, but nothing special. My major (communcation disorders) is not very common so maybe that helped, but I really have no idea why I got the scholarship.

I applied to Pitt during one of their open houses during the summer. Received the full honors tuition scholarship and $$$ from engineering dept. I'm ranked 4 out of 588 with 34 ACT and 2150 SAT. I'm an OOS about 5 hours from Pittsburgh. Did not send in any recommendations or EC but did include an essay. I am waiting to hear about the Chancellor interview.

Thanks for the replies. That helps a lot. The "promoting diversity" listed under almost every scholarship had me confused. I was wondering if a student wasn't a minority if there was no way they'd even have a chance, but it doesn't sound that way at all. You are all amazing students. Great job!

LurkNess andf Momhippo,

I'm curious why your daughter and son didn't pursue the Chancellor's? Were they burned out with the whole application process?

^^^ Yes, my daughter was kind of burned out by that point. Also, I believe only about 10 or 15 Chancellor's awards are given out among 400 applicants. My daughter didn't think the odds were in her favor, and to be honest, we were all delighted with the full-tuition scholarship.

The Chancellor seemed like too much of a long shot to spend time on. I read a thread from last year and couldn't believe the sky-high stats of kids who didn't get interviews.

Even though we think it will be a long shot for my son to get the interview, he did fill out the application anyways. From reading the posts from last year, chances are slim to none since they have already awarded him a full tuition scholarship plus the $4,000 from engineering. We are OOS (Virginia). And same here, LurkNessMonster -- we are thrilled with the full tuition and additional money!!

Pretty much the same story for my son. High stats 1550, rank #1/550, 7 APs (one 4 the rest 5s), great teacher and counselor recs, really interesting essay. Not URM or any hook, didn't apply to Chancellor's because a full ride at another St school was likely and was going to Florida during the two week window.

Pitt was his safety but at this point not a likely choice. However, we're going to visit in Feb just to check it out. Seems like a great school.

We were ecstatic with what S got and figured he might as well stop here. But as they say in NY (and everywhere else) you've gotta be in it to win it. You never know... Good Luck to the Chancellor applicants!

I can easily understand why so many posters didn't end up pursuing Chancellor's; I almost didn't myself. When the application materials first came, I was so tired and burned out I basically had to force myself to do it. Really, though, the people who get full tuition as their base scholarship offer are probably near the top of that applicant pool to begin with. For those people, at least, I'd guess the odds of success aren't as bad as they seem.

Good luck to all who applied! Please post when you get your interview offers...

kcarls, how difficult is that Chancellor's application? Are you required to write multiple essays and get additional recommendations?

3 essays. 2 recs. app itself is easy

The short turnaround time (2 weeks) is part of what makes applying seem like a chore, especially if a student is in a time crunch with other apps, activities, sports, etc.
