I'm a junior and I've taken two AP exams already and I will be taking two more next month, and four more my senior year. Should I send my scores this year? Are they used in the admissions process? My mom said sending scores your junior year would show interest, but is it even worth it?

No, don’t send your AP scores yet.

When you apply to college, most schools only want you to self-report your AP scores. There are a few schools that have various testing requirement options that include AP scores (eg. NYU) and you would need to send AP Score reports to them.

For the vast majority of schools, you only send an AP Score Report to the school where you matriculate, so that they can determine credit and placement.

As far as showing interest, first go to the CDS and see if it is a considered/important factor for each school. Generally students show interest other ways such as visiting, applying ED, etc.

Also, AP scores usually sent to the registration office instead of admission office. Wait for you last AP score and then send to the school you matriculated.

AP scores are not used for the admissions process. Send in all your scores to the college you’ve decided upon after you’ve received all your scores.

As I stated earlier, there are some schools that will accept AP scores as one option in their testing requirements. For example, NYU:

Standardized Tests;

I agree that the expense of sending the AP scores is not worth it since most colleges will trust that you are being honest on your application with regards to your AP scores. However, for your top school (or two), you could send the scores just in the hopes that they see the gesture of your commitment of really wanting to go there… it probably doesn’t add anything but that would be the only case where I think it might be worth the money.
