I have about 3 weeks until I start my first semester as a college freshman and I have started looking into getting a part time job. I was wondering if it would be best to start applying to these jobs now, when the probability of me landing one of these jobs is higher, or if I should apply after I get settled into school.

I have my class schedule already, so I would work my job hours around that if I applied now. But I don't know how much time I will need for studying, homework, practice (I'm a music performance major), etc. I want to wait until I get settled in to begin the application process for these jobs, but I also don't want to wait until these positions are filled. Any advice?

There are a couple of things to keep in mind… first, college classes are much more taxing than high school classes, so recognize that you will actually wind up with about half as much time as you think you have right now; second, if you are in the area and can interview for jobs, I’d go for it, but don’t set a certain schedule for the semester since you may add or drop a course in the first week or two of school.

I would wait for a while, get used to your college classes. If you find that you can handle them with lots of extra time on your hands, then you can get a part-time job to fill up that time. There’s no point in applying early then realizing you have too much school work to work.

Also, if you are on Financial Aid, you need to maintain your GPA, otherwise, you will be placed on academic probation. If you really need a job, go first to the career center on campus. They will have the leads of businesses who will work around your schedule. Agree with ChrisW.
