When to apply for scholarships and honors program.

I am from the Northeast and I am not a candidate for Financial aid. I am interested in Michigan's honors program and any scholarships. I am from a small school that does not rank but I am top 10%, 3.98 UW GPA, most rigurous cirriculum (I have taken almost all the AP's my school offers), SAT 1560, SAT II's. 800,790,760. EIC newspaper, 4 years in Mock Trial/Varsity sport/math team/SADD/Student Government. I have worked for a local paper for 2 years, won a few local writing competitions and one national, wrote an article for a national magazine and attend Saturday honors classes for High School students at a local Ivy.

Please let me know if you think I could qualify for a substantial scholarship and if I would be a candidate for the honors program. Also how do I apply for the honors program or the scholarships??

not completely sure, but i think you are automatically considered for honors and scholarships or something...speaking of honors, what is it like and, hypothetically, how would it rank among other schools in the country. for instance, UM as a whole is generally top 25 or higher, would honors be top 10?

already got honors, i did not apply

You'll surely be invited to join Honors college, but if you're anxious about it, you can initiate the process. It's not a problem. My son did this because he didn't want to go to Michigan unless he could be in Honors. He was accepted - and the Honors Program admissions people were very friendly.
As for merit scholarships, I really don't know. Being a state school, a lot of merit aid is directed to state residents. But you're certainly one of the top students - so I would call the Financial Aid office.

LSA gives out about 60 Deans scholarships of 15,000/yr . My outofstate son was offered this last year--lesser stats than yours. I think they have some higher ones, too. He didn't have to apply for this; it was automatic (didnt have to apply for FA to get it, either). Unfortunately, he turned it down, :(

I did not apply, but I received notice that I am the receipient of the University of Michigan Scholar Award (MSA) for $20,000.
Stats on another post.

wow $20,000! good job allrightie!

if i haven't received information about the MSA, does it mean that i won't be getting it at all? :-( or any other merit-based aid for that matter?

when was your son notified about his Dean's Scholarship, garland? he must have gotten into a really good university to turn down UM and that much money!

I was accepted Nov 9 and received notification of the MSA award a few days ago, so it seems as if one would know approximately 2 weeks after acceptance.
