When to be a starving artist

I'd like to be a starving, probably homeless artist for a summer or so. However, I'd also like to have a career in software design. It's probable that I can get a relevant internship this summer, having finished three years of undergraduate education. Or I could bum around the pacific northwest, finish my bachelors, and then go for an internship.

So, in terms of real-job type careers, when is a better time to have a starving artist phase: a summer during undergrad years or immediately after?

That is so stupid

The answer is never.

Why can’t you be a starving software designer?

Software design is an art.

I didn’t ask for your value judgements, I asked for your career advice. I don’t care how worthwhile you find artistic pursuits.

@j89: Yes, software design is an art, but musicianship is a big, important part of my life. Not one that I want to rely on to support me long-term though.

Try again.
