WHEN to buy a laptop?

Hello everyone,

I'm entering college Fall 2009. I was wondering --- WHEN should I buy my laptop? Basically: when are prices for good quality laptops lower than the are during the rest of the year? I know that a lot of stores have college/Christmas/Thanksgiving sales and usually give low prices, but the items always seem to be old or have some flaws.

So when is an ideal time to buy a laptop, not pay more than you should, and still get a good-quality product?

Thanks!

August is always a good time to buy because of the back to school specials.

If you are looking at Lenovo, they have great deals on outlet products, which include 100% new computers that people custom ordered and returned unused. They usually give 20-30% discounts on those.

You can always find good coupons for dell computers either just by searching for it or buying it on ebay for cheap.

If you are a costco member, you can buy dell and HP custom through them. They have a 90 day return window and give you an extra year of warranty.

Otherwise many brick and mortar stores will have sales in august.

august or september. if your campus has a computer store, they also might have a special around the end of september, since that's the end of the (fiscal) quarter.

if you want a computer before august, certain manufacturers have a year-round education discount.

I agree that August, with its back to school specials, is your best bet. There would also be Black Friday and the rest of the holiday shopping season, but that's only if you want to do without a laptop for a good part of your first semester in college (which won't be too bad if you have another computer already you can use in the meantime).

Also, some college have special deals through their site, or through their store, so you might want to wait until you get accepted to potentially take a look =)
