when to contact college coach?

hey i was just wondering when the best time would be to contact a college bball coach for D-III schools..i play on my varsity team and im pretty good and would like to know when the best time would be to contact some coaches to schedule a meet/greet..

btw, im a rising junior..

Well according to NCAA rules the coaches are not allowed to have contact with a player until after July 1st before their senior year. I'm not exactly sure what other conditions fall under this rule, but that is the basic guideline.

okay, so i would pretty much go through this yr..play bball, etc, then contact coaches next summer?

start now, email the coach to show you're interested. For DIII There are not restrictions for phone calls made by coaches. So he or she can contact you.

Here is a good guide from a track and field website, but it could apply to all sports.

Oh sorry about that, I knew there was some exception to that but I wasn't exactly sure on what it was.

np..thank you so much for the input!

post your question on the parents forum. There are several parents who have kids that are in intercollegiate sports at all levels and can help you with the recruiting process, as well as give you guidance on how to interpret what the coaches can really promise you when they seem to be dangling admission in front of you.

I'm not sure about the DIII rules about coaches proactively contacting you but I do know that any college coach can respond to a communication you initiate (email, snail mail, phone, etc) whenever you contact them. So I'd suggest contacting the schools you are interested in ASAP (most teams have a link for prospective students to contact the coach on their webpage). FYI - you may want to check www.ncaa.org to get the rules for DIII basketball recruiting. You may also want to check out www.d3hoops.com for more info on DIII hoops.

I looked to play DIII tennis and contacted the coaches starting my Sophomore year. Learning about a university's program early can help you made a decision early. I didn't want to go anywhere that was too intense or was looking for too much time training as I was much more interested in the academic part of college. You should try to make a talk to a coach part of any college visit that you make.

I agree. I started getting mail from a bunch of colleges D1 and D3 in my sophomore year. Depending on the sport, coaches can contact you by phone once in May. And then tlak to you on the phone like 5 times after July 1st. Can't remember the exact dates. Check out www.ncaaclearinghouse.com They have the recruiting dates listed with regulations and stuff, very informative.
